Russian media has reported that work has begun on the Moscow Raceway, a new track located in Volokolamsk, a town 77 km east of Moscow. The circuit is intended to meet the necessary requirements for top level racing, including Formula One, although the first races that will be bid for are likely to be DTM and MotoGP.
The circuit has been designed by Hermann Tilke, with Hans Geist (who worked on the A1-Ring in Austria) employed as the project s executive director. It is hoped that the work on the track will be completed by 2010 and is expected to cost around 5.5 billion roubles (approximately $215 million).
David Coulthard was present at the site as work began. The F1 veteran planted an oak tree at the circuit s site.
