Tickets for the Spanish Grand Prix have not been selling as well as had been hoped, and it is believed that the race is unlikely to be a sell-out.
The figures are in stark contrast to last season where nearly 142,000 fans filled the circuit over the weekend, a record attendance for the track. Part of the reason for the surge in popularity in Spain was thanks to local hero and double world champion, Fernando Alonso, who was expected to challenge for a win in his McLaren.
This season paints a different story the Spaniard is struggling with an uncompetitive car and it is unlikely he will be challenging for pole position or a race win. With Spain also hosting two races this season the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona and the European Grand Prix in Valencia some fans are also choosing to attend just the one race. The net result is that there are expected to be around 20,000 spare seats across the race weekend.
