Stoddart would love Webber in his team

Paul Stoddart, boss of Champ Car Team Minardi, has said he would love to sign Mark Webber to his team but does not think that Webber wants to be parted from Formula 1 quite yet.

In 2000, Webber drove for Stoddart in Formula 3000 before joining him at Minardi two years later, finishing fifth in Melbourne. Talking to the Herald Sun newspaper, Stoddart said, “I would crawl over broken glass to have Mark drive for me in Champ Car, but I think he has a lot more to achieve in F1. I still very much rate Mark as a driver. I don’t think he has had the right car to show how good he is.”

Webber has just joined Red Bull after two disappointing seasons at William. Stoddart however is unconvinced about the move. “I’m not sure how competitive the Red Bull will be against the big-budget teams,” he explained. “It has been quick sometimes in testing but I understand there have been some problems too.

“The most important thing is for him to beat his teammate. I’m sure Mark vs David will be one of the most interesting races within the race itself.”

Stoddart will be commenting at the season opener in Melbourne for the radio station 3AW.
