SMRT: Our trams did not cause Webber’s retirement

Mark WebberSingapore s Mass Rapid Transit (SMRT) system have said that their trams were not responsible for the gearbox troubles which caused Red Bull s Mark Webber to retire from the Singapore Grand Prix.

Webber s gearbox broke after it tried to engage two gears at the same time. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner later explained that he believed static from a passing tram causing a small electrical surge which caused the gearbox to malfunction, pointing out that Toro Rosso also suffered the same problem at exactly the same point with Bourdais during Friday practice.

“There is no MRT track beneath Turn 13,” SMRT officials explained to news agency AFP. “The nearest MRT tunnel is about 200 metres away with a depth of about ten metres. And train wheels and running wheels do not generate static electricity.”
