Schumacher admits to minor neck strain

Michael Schumacher has admitted that he is suffering from a sore neck following two days of testing in Jerez.

Many fans had hoped that Schumacher would return to F1 in 2009 as a replacement for Felipe Massa however problems with his neck saw him unfit to compete, with Giancarlo Fisichella stepping in to replace Massa instead.

Schumacher has tested the new Mercedes car for two days this week in preparation for his F1 return. The test was officially billed as a development test for the 2011 GP2 car however some believe that the test may also have been to test Schumacher’s fitness levels.

“There is some minor muscular strain, but it’s completely normal,” Schumacher commented.

“There will be an acclimatisation phase when I sit in the real [F1] car at the beginning of February. In the past I have never managed to be able to train the muscles in the neck so that you feel nothing at all.”
