Pirelli to begin tyre testing tomorrow

Pirelli are set to begin the tests of their 2011-spec tyres tomorrow at the Mugello circuit in Italy.

The Italian manufacturer, which recently made the deal to supply the sport from next season onwards, will use a 2009-spec Toyota TF109 to run the tests.

After having consulted FOTA, the company is believed to have chosen the Toyota on the basis that it shares design characteristics with the current crop of cars. An intention not to show preference to any team running now is also thought to have been a factor.

Mercedes tester and GPDA president Nick Heidfeld will be behind the wheel.

Further tests are expected before the year is out at Monza and Paul Ricard.
