European GP – Practice Session 2

Kimi Raikkonen responded to the pressure Lewis Hamilton applied in the first practice session by topping the timesheets in practice session 2. Hamilton found himself relegated to second with team-mate Alonso in fourth. Massa upped his game to finish third overall.

The second practice session at the Nurburgring was marred by rain. Initially the drivers went out on-track on intermediate tyres thanks to the downpour that had occurred during the GP2 practice session before them.

Having put in a strong performance in the first session, the BMWs failed to shine in the second, finishing in 9th and 10th. The Toyotas proved they have some speed finishing in 5th and 6th.

Despite the treacherous conditions, there weren t many dramatic incidents to note. Hamilton pushed a little too hard at the end of the session, trying to respond to Raikkonen s flying lap, spinning at the Michelin Kurve. No damage was done and he was able to rejoin the track, however he went off road again on his next lap, heading across the grass at Ford Kurve.

Massa found himself on another off-road trip, running wide on the exit of stadium and bouncing across the grass. Liuzzi in his Toro Rosso copied Hamilton and also took a trip across the grass at Ford Kurve. Winkelhock had another difficult session, ending the day in the gravel after a spin at Bit Curve, 20 minutes from the end of the session. He ended the second practice session trailing his team-mate by 0.8 seconds.
