Hakkinen to make a comeback?

Following on from this story, it seems there is a possiblity of a third driver being in the running for the seat alongside Alonso at McLaren for the 2007 season. This week, rumours have been flying that Mika Hakkinen will possibly be in the second driving seat.

However, McLaren have denied any plans to bring Mika out of retirement. Hakkinen won the world title with McLaren in ’98 and ’99. He has recently been in the team’s simulator and has asked if he could be involved in McLaren’s Formula 1 programme, however he has not requested to make a comeback as a racing driver.

Martin Whitmarsh, McLaren’s chief executive, stated, “We currently have no plans to run Mika alongside Alonso next year. The identity of our second driver will be announced in due course.”
