Following on from the news that a brand-new circuit is being planned on Australia’s Gold Coast – a circuit that could not only host the Australian grand prix in the future but also has the potential to be a night race – the head of Queensland’s government has spoken out.
Premier Peter Beattie has said that no planning permission has yet been given for the new circuit and that there is no certainty that the track will be given permission. He has also claimed that he has ‘no interest’ in helping the private project attrack Formula 1.
“This is quality agricultural land,” he stated. “We’ve got to be careful what we do with it.”
There are suggestions that the new track story was leaked to the media in the hope that the government would be forced into giving planning approval in an environmentally sensitive area because of huge public demand.
