Ferrari surprised by double engine failure

Ferrari F2008Despite one of their worst starts to an F1 season in more than a decade, Ferrari are staying calm according to team principal Stefano Domenicali.

Neither Ferrari driver managed to finish the Australian Grand Prix with both Massa and Raikkonen suffering from engine problems during the race. Raikkonen managed to scrape a single point after Rubens Barrichello was disqualified, moving the Finn up into the final points scoring position.

“The result speaks for itself,” Domenicali said. “Unfortunately it was a dreadful weekend nothing went as planned so it was difficult. But it you remember in 2006 we had a similar start with two DNFs and we were able to catch up again.

“We weren t phenomenal guys before this race and we are nt stupid after it, so we really need to analyze in all the details what has happened and, of course, the main concern it to understand the reliability problems. We had two engines fail so this is the main issue to understand.

“But we need to stay cool, calm and concentrated. We need not be too emotional now because it is very easy to go down that route we need to stay very rational.”

Domenicali did admit that the failures were a surprise having had a good winter test period. “It was a surprise after so many kilometres we did in the winter,” he said. “We need to understand why exactly did that happen.”
