Empty handed at the Laureus Awards

It’s the first time in four years that Formula 1 has left the Laureus Awards empty handed.

Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher had both been nominated in the Sportsman of the Year category, an award that Schumacher has won in 2002 and 2004, however they both lost out to tennis star Roger Federer who took the award for the third time.

Renault were nominated for the Team of the Year, an award that they won last year, however the football World Cup winners Italy beat them to win the award.

Lewis Hamilton was widely tipped to take the Breakthrough of the Year award after winning last season’s GP2 title, however double tennis Grand Slam winner Amelie Mauresmo was awarded the honour.
