Drivers back Renault’s decision to look to the future

Renault, world champions for the last two seasons in Formula 1, have had a torrid 2007. Expected to do well, they have failed to match up to their previous years efforts and are languishing in fourth place in the constructors championship behind McLaren, Ferrari and BMW.

The team have chosen to cut their losses this season and focus their efforts on 2008 instead. This decision is backed by both of their drivers.

“It is a decision made by the team and it is also the right one,” Heikki Kovalainen commented. “It is time to focus on next year now we have sort some of the problems with this year s car and the wind tunnel. All that is correlating well and we are getting the right results from the wind tunnel for time to shift focus.”

“Where we are right now, I think it is the right decision,” Giancarlo Fisichella added. “We went ahead with the development of the car from the beginning of the season but the gap between us and the leaders is too big. There is nothing to do, even if we work 100% on the 2007 car until the end of the season. But then you are a little bit late with the 2008 car, so it is the right decision.”
