Doornbos to replace Scott Speed?

Gerhard Berger, co-owner of the Toro Rosso team, is adding fuel to the speculation that Rovert Doornbos will replace Scott Speed in the 2007 season as partner to Liuzzi. Toro Rosso have yet to confirm their driver line-up. Doornbos was a test driver in 2006 and was promoted to full race driver when Christian Klien left the team near the end of the season. Doornbos has already had an offer to be Red Bull Racing’s test driver for 2007.

Gossip surrounds Speed with Toro Rosso apparently unhappy with the inconsistency of his performances and the fact Berger is interested in the sponsor money that Doornbos would attract. Berger has said “Dietrich Mateschitz and I will discuss the driver question soon. When the time is right, a decision will be made.”

Meanwhile at Honda, the identity of the new test driver will be revealed in the next seven days, according to Honda’s principal Nick Fry. With Anthony Davidson looking set to move to Super Aguri, Fry has admitted that Christian Klien and Gary Paffett are the two most likely drivers to take over the role.
