Arguments over the new tyre rules

Two ex-Williams drivers, David Coulthard and Mark Webber, are leading the assault on the new tyre regulations that will force drivers to use two different tyres specs in each race. “There’s not exactly going to be a great deal of suspense,” Coulthard has been quoted as saying, speculating that there won’t be much overtaking towards the end of each race because drivers will run the fastest spec at the start of the race.

However, William’s technical director, Sam Michael, disagrees. “You could do short first stings on soft tyres,” he explained. “Or you could do them at the end.” Michael supports the rule as he believes it will continue to make tyres a talking point, even though there is not tyre war any more. “It adds another small element to the show,” he said.
