I say everyone has been shocked by the horrific rampage that took place yesterday at Virginia Tech. This is not an isolated case, the Columbine Massacre also back in 1999. Is it the time for people to wake up and see whats happening when you have a right to own a gun. I'm not having a go at USA only but in London its rapidly rising and here too in Dublin. Can we forget this and until it happens again maybe not, but many, many people died yesterday and I don't know if America or any other country can do anything about it.

Well, it appears that it wasn0't even an american but a south korean student - whaddya think about that ?

They need to get their weapons law under control - the days of the wild west are over. Why on earth should normal citizens own a gun ? Why should it be so easy to get an instrument which only purpose is to kill humans ?

I agree with the general idea of curbing gun ownership. The NRA (National Rifle Association) would tell you that the instrument in question is NOT necessarily to kill humans, but to hunt game (yeah right). There's also some weird ol' passage in the US constitution about the right to bear arms and in order to change the constitution, it takes quite a bit.
Interestingly, in Switzerland, as you know Freddie, every man who's done his military duty (your 'normal' citizen so to speak because it's compulsory for every man) keeps his rifle at home with a specified number of rounds. He then takes this rifle to a shooting range on a more or less regular basis and practices his shooting skills. Officers get to keep their army pistol as well.
So, in Switzerland we have PLENTY of arms lying around, too. Guess what, homicide rate is way lower than in the US. So, it's not just the guns. Guns don't kill - people do! However, Switzerland has one of the worldwide highest suicide rates and just the other week a study linked this fact to the easy availability of arms, especially during or after domestic disputes, etc. Go figure...

Its not the gun that kills but the bullet. Just make bullets cost $5000 each. Use the money to pay for new schools and meicare. Done, all problems with shooting, education, and medicare are over.

Or just outlaw all bullets - that way the gun fanatics could still bear arms according to the constitution, but it would be a bit difficult to kill somebody. You could go 'bang-bang!', but you'd have to be a bit dodgy on the heart to die from this :)

Why is it that in Canada there are more guns per person than in the US, but gun crime is so so low compared to the US?!

Because Canadians are all so focking nice! It's unbearable! When I used to live in Calgary, Alberta, they were all so nice and polite. Interactions with Canadians were a pure joy because many of them are also more open-minded and less self-centered in their worldview than Americans. I love Canada! :D:oops::D

And so do I! I went snowboarding there a few years ago and everyone was so damn nice, it reminded me of where i grew up (a small local town in wales). It's just so shocking that a border makes that much difference to peoples attitudes!

Like Switzerland needs to make it compulsory for every man to do tour of duty for his country, theyre never in any wars :) so scrap that and your suicide rate will drop dramatically!

Almost twenty years ago there was in fact a people's initiative to dismantle the Swiss army - a peace dividend in view of the end of the cold war: http://www.gsoa.ch/gsoa/en/
Alas, only 35% voted yes, which is a lot actually because there's a sizeable portion of the population who votes 'no' in principal no matter what since they oppose any changes.
