ESPNF1:
Looking to the next major regulation changes in 2013, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said he was not ruling out the possibility of the team switching its engine supplier or even producing its own engines. In 2013 Formula One will use 1.6-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged engines and Red Bull team owner Dietrch Mateschitz recently hinted at a major change.

"We are on stand-by for an interesting partnership," he said. "And even the idea of developing our own engine, I think, is no longer so absurd."

In a more recent interview with laola1.at, Horner added: "It is important to keep all the options open. This is one of Mr Mateschitz's great strengths."

An F1 engine deal with car giant Volkswagen, however, might be considered more likely.

"With Didi's vision, anything is possible," Horner acknowledged.

RB-RB not out of the question either - a true manufacturer team...

There's about about a 10% weight difference between a gallon of diesel and a gallon of gasoline. In F1, that may be a non starter.

But diesels use less fuel...

I think that F1 will go electric before it goes diesel! I don't mind smaller turbocharged gasoline engines in F1 but I draw the line at diesels! :nono:

In my mind the partnership makes sense even though Red bull made their renault power really work for them.

Sarcasm mode on:

I can't wait for F1 to turn hybrid and to sound like my vacuum cleaner when they negotiate the slower corners of all race tracks.

Off:

On topic though, Redbull with their success can definitely turn into a full manufacturer. Why not? Their's is a perfect case study of how a new team comes into F1, puts everything and everyone in the right places to grow for a few years...and dominate.

Red Bull producing engines. Is this a...What? They might badge them, but produce them? That's a pretty long-term investment in motorsport for the producer of the world's least successful attempt at a Cola. Still, they are part of the Next-Generation Privateers, alongside the likes of McLaren and Team Lotus, so I guess it's possible.

They've become a globally recognized brand from a product few admit to drinking... how is that possible?

I guess they know where to put their sponsorship dollars. Must have some crack marketing team.
