Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has criticised Felipe Massa's performance this season, saying that he drove like his brother.

Massa, who finished sixth in the Drivers' standings, 108 points behind his team-mate Fernando Alonso, has endured a lot of negative press this season having failed to match the performances of Alonso.

In analysing Massa's performance in a speech at Ferrari's traditional Christmas lunch at their Maranello base, di Montezemolo said that: "Felipe had a complicated season, but he will be able to get back to the level that saw him back in 2008 which is not exactly a long time ago, become world champion, albeit for just a few seconds."

However, the Ferrari chief is later quoted as telling Italian journalists by Reuters that: "At a certain point in the season Felipe was fed up and sent his brother.

"For this Felipe gets 7 minus. For Alonso, in his first season in Ferrari, I give him 9 and a half. But unfortunately even he didn't win."

The 63-year-old's comments are sure to go down poorly with his Brazilian employee, further undermining Massa's long-term future at the team.

Di Di Di Di Montezemolo is at it again with his stupid arse comments :banghead:

i think that massa is probaly edging closer to borrowed time

yeah but for a president of the fiat group let alone Ferrari to criticise you in a public forum especially when he knew he gave up a win in Germany for the teams sake says a lot!

Frankly di Montezemolo should talk to the driver instead of running his mouth to the press, undermining Massa so publicly is unlikely to inspire a resurgence next season, it's more likely to inspire a defection to another team! I think Montezemolo should butt out and let Stefano Domenicali run the team. I firmly believe that di Montezemolo is a real hindrance to the Ferrari cause, always undermining the drivers with useless comments, let's the team principle speak for the team, that's what he is paid for!!!

His assessment of Massa was accurate, fair and honest (something which is alarmingly absent in modern professional sport)

His score rating of "about 7" was bloody generous. Seriously, in the back of the season Massa was NOWHERE to assist Alonso.

Reads like yet another article where things are lost in translation and taken out of context... Monty isn't stupid!

yeah too right! and going to myownalias point, it can have one of those effects, it can either give them extra motavation or it can destroy them, i think if it was me, id want a another crack to have a better season and go out there and prove yourself!

I don't think Monty's words will work, but what he's basically saying is Massa is a good driver, the dude you saw that was crap "must've been his brother", I'm sure everyone familiar with the idea? I here it used for commentators in football a lot, "Drogba missed a sitter, that must be his twin out there", so he's basically saying its out of character.

Although thinking of it, its used more in reverse in football, ie when a crap player does good,

""For this Felipe gets 7 minus. ...."

I think that knock on the head took away some of his fighting spirit. Poor guy.

My point is; why is he saying things anything like this to the press, he's the president of FIAT not the Ferrari F1 team principle. Nearly all his comments, misquoted or not do nothing for the image of Ferrari in F1. He comes across as very whiny when the rules don't suit his/Ferrari's agenda and this latest comment in the off season has no logic!

Yep very ignorant of him imo and very judgemental not only towards Massa but the entire team aswell. He needs to focus on the corporate issues and let the people he put into place do their job. He has been involved way too long in F1 not to realize how each season and driver can fair.

If only F1 was like baseball or football, just set yourself up on an anabolic steroid program and voila... a career season the following year.
