Russia is set to announce a five-year deal to host a Formula 1 grand prix from 2014, according to a government source in the country.

Formula 1 commercial chief Bernie Ecclestone is meeting prime minister Vladimir Putin in the city of Sochi, reports the Reuters news agency.

Putin was quoted as saying: "We have reached an agreement with the principal owner of Formula 1 that Sochi would host the Russian Grand Prix from 2014 to 2020."

Sochi is on the south west Black Sea coast of Russia, near the Georgian border, and will also host the Winter Olympics in 2014.

Russia has had its first Formula 1 driver this year, with Renault's Vitaly Petrov 13th in the standings with 19 points. Though his place at the team beyond the end of this season is yet to be confirmed.

So which circuit is going to give way? I've heard several people from the F1 paddock say that in the press that they don't want more than 20 races in a season.

A lot could change between now and 2014, that's for sure.
And, I'm also sure Bernie will be happy to use this new Russian GP to pressure existing circuits in his negotiations and renegotiation with them.
On top of all that, it would not surprise me one bit, if there were 20 viable paying circuits and this new one, that, between now and 2014 Bernie might just come up with a reason why we could have 21 races in a season.

naaahh they'll race

What about Imola? are they going to let it go to waste? Imola is ace!

Remove Bahrain, remove Barcelona... remove Fuji (ie keep Suzuka... forever). Keep Spa... Forever. Then keep whatever else and add Russia and USA. That seems good to me.... should be somewhere around 20 GPs.

Insha'Allah, that will be Bernie's successor's call to make.

Sorry, but Catalunya is a historic circuit and is much loved by all drivers to drive on (also myself on Playstation Games. :) )

Valencia probably should go at this rate... Maybe they'll be rotating the Canadian and US GP? And Spa and Russia?

Grand Prix season of 2014:

1. Melbourne
2. Malaysia
3. China
4. India
5. Catalunya
6. Monaco
7. Silverstone
8. Turkey
9. Russia
10. Montreal
11. Austin
12. Valencia
13. Germany (Nurburgring and Hockenheim rotate)
14. Hungary
15. Spa
16. Singapore
17. Korea
18. Suzuka
19. Abu Dhabi
20. Brazil

That's 20 if you drop Bahrain. We have to keep Catalunya because it is good from a car's development point of view. Its probably technically one of the best circuits.

I was also wondering if it would be better to hold

a) Abu Dhabi 4th, India in between Singapore and Korea?
b) Abu Dhabi before the fly-away races to North America? For the life of me I cannot understand why they left Europe for one race this season and then came back. Obviously put Austin with Montreal. Is Abu Dhabi really a "fly-away race?"
c) leave it as it is. :wavey:

Clearly if oil-rich Bahrain were to stay, then one of the others WILL be dropped. Let's hope it isn't Spa. But I'm concerned that that may be the case... Spa or maybe Hungary...

Mate, you're happy to leave out a home GP for the biggest/longest standing F1 group in existence? Eeek! :yikes:
