I know that America is of course a country, but with states bigger than most European countries and able to pretty much write their own laws, they are in some way an individual country. Now from my understanding, a continent must be vast, which North America is and must have individual countries, well I guess the states kind of are countries in a way. You must take into consideration that I am speculating from a British person's point of view and know not much of the different cultures in different states and so on. I very much doubt the USA will become seperate countries, but with states that big, I find myself treating it atleast as a half continent.

IMO the continent of North America is made up of countries such as the United States of America, Canada, Mexico etc. Yes the USA is huge and is probably more than half the continent it sits on but I'm not sure if it can be broken down like the countries of Europe.

AFAIK there is only one state that reserves the right to be it's own country, and that's the Lone Star State, Texas, the only state that's bigger is Alaska. different states can have radically different cultures, some French, some Spanish some Italian or a mixture of different cultures, each state has it's own counties like the UK, so from that perspective, each state could be described as it's own country, you could fit the UK several times over in the state I live, Kansas and that's only the 13th biggest state.

Canada 9,984,670
People's Republic of China 9,596,961–9,640,011 (depending on definition)
United States 9,629,091
Brazil Brazil 8,514,877
Australia 7,692,024

You could invade Mexico, then you'd be bigger than Canada.

As I am Scottish first, British second. The UK is a country consisting of four countries! Not quite sure how that works.

I'm a European first, and Britishman second. 8-)

As for America ,no expert by a long shot, but I guess the key is sovereignty (states can't just withdraw from Federal Government) and the fact that the people still have a united view of themselves as a country (USA).
