I'm a typically ignorant Brit, I speak one language fluently and that's English. On a good day I can remember a few German phrases but that's my limit.

I speak Spanish to God, Italian to women, French to men and German to my horse. - Charles V

I only speak English, they tried to teach me French in school but I wasn't motivated then, suppose I still know the basics and might be able to pick it up again at uni. Also had Italian lessons at school, although those were so infrequent I picked up almost nothing.

Know a few words of Punjabi from my parents, picked those up "naturally", huge bias towards food there though, since that's where we most commonly use them, its mainly English speaking at home though.

They really should teach languages properly in school (in the UK), although I suppose now it benefits the country since it provides a barrier to everyone fleeing to countries in the E.U.

I'm doing some classroom obervation in a Primary school at the moment and they've started to teach French at that level. Unfortunately none of the teachers have any knowledge of the language and there's no coordination with secondary schools so many are ending up learning French at Primary level and being taught German at secondary level. Not the most logical system in the world.

Oh yeah, I was only making the comment offhand but that is supposed to be one of the main problems. Not enough specialist teachers, I think the other is schools say the curriculum's already too packed.

Suppose like anything, it'll need proper thinking and investment (long term) to actually work, which I highly doubt will happen. Probably more likely to end up with private companies teaching it with pure emphasise on simply passing the exams.

Fluent in English and my home language Irish, studied German for 7 years but out of School since '07 and have forgotten most of it!

Trying to learn Italian too, its a real boost going to a country and don't have to point and speak slower for someone to understand.
