Yesterday in qualifying and particularly today during the race, the SPEED tv commentators noted a low throaty note to the McLaren's exhaust. I paid attention when they focused on the note and it certainly sounded different than the other cars around them. Almost like a cheap Honda Civic boy racer with a budget exhaust.

I would say it had a note of how an exhaust would sound under downshifting, but all the time. Maybe that's their solution to the blown diffuser, but I'd love to hear more about it in the coming days. Wonder if European commentators picked it up.

It somewhat sounded like a "Jake Break".
For those of you on the other side of the pond, a Jake Break is an engine compression break that trucks use to slow by using the engine energy.
Works good in rain and sounds something like that.

I think it's actually called a "Jake Brake" but yes, it did sound a bit like that. Can't see F1 cars using one, though. It only operates on the driven wheels and would cause havoc with the front/back brake balance.

Never heard of or heard a jake brake before but reading about it, it's to do with keeping the exhaust ports open which might be what they're doing to keep the blown diffuser working under braking.

Whatever it is, its nice to hear some varity in engine sounds.

Don't you hate all the uniformity commanded by the TR and how it throttles diversity and innovation?

I started shouting at the commentators during the course of the race because they got me a bit worried about it every time they talked about it, which was several times. Based on Hamilton's luck, I really expected that he would have a good race and then have it taken from him at some point, possibly by a mechanical failure, which is something I definitely didn't want that car flatulence to foreshadow.

I wouldn't worry about the engine, the Merc has been stellar this year both in performance and reliability. I would expect a stupid error from the team's part...let's say a hydraulic failure...gearbox...maybe a mechanic leaving his coffee cup in the fuel tank. Someone forgot to close a valve cover or something on Jensons car in Monaco!!

I remeber watching a segment that showed what they were doing,

Here is what i understand:

They put a wing in the tip of the exhaust outlet to redirect exhaust flow.

I dont know if they are redirecting it towards the diffuser or away from suspesion.

They still have 2 exhaust tips but each tip is split
