Could be they're about to change Stigs again. The present incarnation reportedly is not happy that the other stars of the show receive residuals and a share of the show's/magazine's merchandising. The Stig, OTOH, is on straight salary. He makes £5,000 to £10,000 per episode whereas JC is reported to make £2 million per year.

I think they had to reveal it because the "Stig" was going to publish an autobiography which obviously would have disclosed he was the Stig.
