I think if Schumacher had seen success to this point. (the success most expected from him) some teams would be tripping over themselves to get Villeneuve on the grid next year. But the fact that Schumacher has bee out driven by his team mate at this point in the season I think is the reason for this story from SPEED below.

F1: Renault Seat Not Likely For Villeneuve Return
Jacques Villeneuve continues to search for a seat in 2011...

Jacques Villeneuve is unlikely to find a seat for his Formula One return with the Renault team.

The boss of the Enstone based outfit, Eric Boullier, says he respects the 1997 world champion but thinks he will struggle to be accommodated with a top team.

French Canadian Villeneuve, 39, came close to returning to F1 this year with Stefan GP, and has announced he will try again to find a seat in 2011.

He is reportedly close to Renault's team owner Gerard Lopez and shareholder Eric Lux, and the related Gravity Sport Management.

"Jacques is a world champion and a driver of exceptional talent for whom I have great respect," Boullier is quoted by Canada's Rue Frontenac.

"There is no doubt he could help a team looking for a driver with his profile. This was not the case for us," he explained.

Boullier thinks Villeneuve, who has not raced in F1 since losing his BMW seat in 2006, would struggle if he came back.

"The current regulations that limit private testing greatly affect the potential return of a non-active driver.

"A driver who leaves competition loses his normal speed, his reflexes are a bit dulled as are his physical abilities to take the car to its maximum potential.

"That's just natural. Whatever you do in sports, the specific skills needed to race in F1 must be constantly maintained," he added.

i heard that Karun Chandhocks seat is underthreat since its a pay drive and the money hasnt' materalized.

Villeneuve might be a possiblity as another pay driver.

I'd much rather they keep Karun tho but if the teams stugging for cas they might not be able to aford to.

Interesting, hadn't heard that myself. I always worry that a certain N. Piquet may come back whenever pay seats are free...

I think Piquet will never want to return, even if he does want to Nelson senior will probably say no, even if Bernie tried to bribe him.

The point of the post is, if the most decorated F1 driver hasn't been able to succeed as most expected, can anyone else?

Wouldn't say he failed though.

I chose my words carefully, and the word fail isn't there for a reason. :D I would only use that word if the results stayed the same at the end of the 2011 season.

But what would Villeneuve have to gain by trundleing around the back, he's already won a title.

Your point being? Schumacher has won 7 titles!

My point is, he's not going to get any more titles driving a hispania, for a driver thats already tasted success why would he want to go to the back.

Exactly, and is the performance Mercedes is getting from Schumacher proof enough that a team is better off getting an under ranked young driver for 1/2 the price and ultimately get better results? So Mercedes/Schumacher may be creating a precedent here that will difficult to undo.

I wouldn't put it past the team to make Schumacher a team consultant, or work a deal to make him co-principal as an out and give him away to exit the driver's role gracefully
