I'm curious what you guys are seeing in in Europe in general and in the UK specifically about BP's oil spill in the Gulf. We're inundated with a constant stream of news and it gets worse and worse every day.

For some reason posting this now reminded me of a line in an 80's song by The Call, The Walls Came Down; "I don't think there are any Russians, and there ain't no Yanks, just corporate criminals, playing with tanks"

Not sure you care about the southern hemisphere as you didn't ask :P but I wouldn't say it's huge down here. There is usually an update on the daily news like any other story.

Didn't mean to disrespect our hemispherical brothers, it's just that I figured that down there the oil would just fall out of the water and would be easy to it clean up. :hehe:

it is a pain in the arse down here, you know the blood rushes to your head daily being upside down and all!

How big is this disaster in the US? ive seen some Facebook groups about boycotting BP.

This is huge right now, but the prognosis is so scary. After 45 days they still don't know how to turn the thing off.. It could have a global effect years from now and that would be just great....

Yeh we are screwed down here in the gulf. I'm not sure if any oil has come ashore in Galveston but I know Florida has already gotten some and the great seafood/fishing industry of Louisiana is fawked. Any news on the lastest BP idea of cutting and capping?? :(

Even scarier is that the only sure way to kill it is with a relief well, that will take until until the July or August time frame to complete. Worst estimate so far have this potentially leaking until the end of the year, if there's a hurricane that impacts the area it will get even uglier.

There is a layer of oil 20 years later from the Exxon Valdez spill, and wildlife in that area has yet to fully recover. Estimates so far have this spill dwarfing the amount of oil spilled in Alaska.

I don't think there are any Russians, and there ain't no Yanks, just corporate criminals, playing with tanks. I've been listening to that all morning.

I thought it was the worst one? but im no expert. I think its scary and horrible, all of them...Seems we're happy to mess with things we dont completely understand the consequences of. Blame? Well its irrelevant, the damage is done and nature is destroyed.

Alot of its scare mongering tho so far i read that this spill isnt even 40th in terms of oil spills

Its bad yeh but it not the worst

If your home coastline enviroment was enduring this sort of catastrophe I doubt you would brush it off so easily as 'scare mongering' . Its rather easy for you to judge since it is not and will most likely not effect you in any direct way but those of us who do live in the Gulf are/will and most likely in the future be effected by this in one way or another.

How about before passing judgement as too the scale of it now wait until it is plugged and then make a personal decision and not from what you have read.

tex

ps,
I'm not intentionally giving you a hard time Gaz I just think you may have a different outlook/opinion if the spill was or could directly effect you. :)

The issue here is that it's in a densely populated area and it effects not only a massive fishing industry in the Gulf but a just as big tourism industry. Even with the conservative estimates of the spill, being 500,000 gallons per day it ranks 15th with the most liberal estimates putting it at 4 million gallons per day which would make it the 2nd worst in history.

It is not expected to be plugged for months unless one of the idea's du jour work, potentially another 50 to 90 days before the relief wells are able to kill it.

No scare tactics needed. The reason there's no accurate estimate is because until recently BP had refused to let scientist and the government look at all of the video feeds they had of the leak.

BP will pay a fine of 1000 to 4000 dollars per barrel of oil spilled depending on whether it's determined that it was negligence on their part.

It's sad though but it just goes to show you have these oil companies work. Apparently BP is only spending 1/3 of its daily earnings. I think it is estimated to make around $60m a day. I'm sure that's how it is.

I realise alot of people in America are trying to start a BP Boycott, but I doubt it would work. It didn't work in the 90s when they tried it for a day with Exxon Mobil. BP owns too many garages and then other divisions in the US.

A more influential issue than their service stations is lobbyist hired by BP which in turn own politicians through "political campaign contributions".

A boycott will not solve the issue at hand but it will atleast effect BP's bottom line ie earnings and profit do to stockholders dismay. The eco friendly mass following grows larger and larger daily and many are stockholders. My readings lead me to hope that we as a 'world' can stop duckling our planet dry and put more effort into alternative energy solutions yet sadly in the long run I doubt it will effect the company as a whole .

Anybody else heard about the guy who in the early 1900's built an engine that would run on H20?? He presented his idea the car manufactures and low and behold was turned down and then soon vanished like Hoffa, oil money and greedy two faced politicians at work I tell ya.
