Qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix will take place as usual after teams failed to agree on a split system.

The Formula One Teams' Association was discussing the possibility of splitting the drivers in two groups of 12 in qualifying for the Monaco event in order to avoid the traffic problems which are likely to hinder drivers next weekend with 24 cars on the streets of the principality.

However, the move was not accepted by some of the teams and qualifying will remain unchanged.

Lotus boss Tony Fernandes said his was one of the teams rejecting the idea.

"There was talk today at FOTA of having a split qualifying, going into a hat with 12 in one and 12 in another," Fernandes told Reuters in the Spanish Grand Prix.

"I said no. We want the race to be exciting, we want to be unpredictable so let qualifying be the same as well.

"I have been in Formula One for seven months now and these guys are very good drivers and they are paid to drive well."

The danger aspect aside, the lower qualifying teams have everything to gain so I can see why they'd want that "unpredictability" he's is talking about.

I think the whole race is a dissaster waiting to hapen.Too many slow cars with nowhere to pass. The main thing i'm prayiong for is no injuries. To be honest probly wont even bother to watch it.No overtaking for sure.

 They managed fine before when there were 26 cars and some were 6,7 seconds slower than the leaders.

They also managed just fine back in '87 when there were TT's and N/A's, go figure.

Q will be hectic. But the race will be worse.

Why not watch it?? because of no overtaking?? when has there been much?
And not really.. there WILL be more overtaking: lapping the backmarkers :hehe:

Just watching the F1 going mad on that circuit, like the 2007 when Alonso and Lewis were going at it... you knew an overtake would be unlikely; but it was a sight to see :) you could feel the tension, specially around the pool section. That was great.

I think they need to be consistent and not change rules just to suit one race. As for the race, this will be the best Monaco race ever due to the traffic.

They sound like a big bunch of girls!!!!! They get paid huge amounts of money and are supposed to be the best 24 drivers in the world, if they can't contend with a bit of potential traffic and edge of your seat Quali they should all just give up.

I personally am really looking forward to Monaco, it offers a massive challenge and a chance for the drivers to show there worth even with a slightly slower car. They'll just have to be a little more cautious than usual due to the close proximity of Monaco but at the end of the day that's what it's all about on a proper street circuit.
