Hi!

First of all, I'm new here and I hope I'll enjoy this forum quite as much as you do!

I was thinking for some time now, how boring F1 is getting. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one...!? Obviously there are always some very exciting moments in F1/race, but in the end I believe it could be better, more interesting. And doing this doesn't mean to change a lot of things (like we've seen in the changes from '08 to '09). Anyway, I came up with some ideas. Some of them might be good, others not. I’d like to know what you think about them!

Rule changes and other stuff to improve Formula 1 and make it more interesting for fans:

1. KERS in.
2. Minimum weight limit higher
3. Usage of KERS limited to a certain amount of time for the whole race (i.e. 120 seconds)
4. But using this 120 seconds without a limiter or an indicator (so, if driver miscounted and uses KERS more than the given time, he gets a penalty, say drive through)
5. One and only one engine for an entire race weekend. If engine brakes down then driver DNQ
6. Much softer tire compound (drivers have to take much more care of their tires or change them /pit more often)
7. Stop using rev. limiter
8. No use of telemetry at all during race for driver/team. (If something is wrong with the car, bad luck or the driver have to drive more carefully!?)
9. No use of radio communication between driver and team
10. Limit the amount of personal for a whole team to a certain number
11. Allow refueling (you want more security: if the fueling hose is in the car, it stalls the throttle; so the driver can't drive away while refueling is taking place)
12. No restrictions for the qualifiers (Q3) like this year it is the case with tires.
13. Like it was some time before: on each qualifying session limit the amount of flying laps to, say 2!?
14. For each P1 on practice session, a driver can have an extra flying lap during qualifying
15. Each team that develops something new during the winter/season, can get a patent (only one) on that development (i.e. F-duct; double diffuser; tire caps, etc.) for the entire season starting with the first race (i.e. if 2 or more teams develop more or less the same thing during winter, the patent starts with the first race; so if more teams had the same idea, they would be allowed to use that idea, but not the other teams, for the entire season)
16. Remove speed limiter for the pit lane during race/qualifying (if a driver can't estimate the max allowed speed, than bad luck and penalty)
17. You want more safety: get rid of carbon brakes, they tend to 'explode'
18. Teams can't touch their cars before race after it leaves the box to the grid. (Except for starting them).
19. Not allowed to heat the tires at all (in the box or grid).
20. Teams are not allowed to refuel cars during qualifying. They can choose how much fuel to take for the qualifying session.
21. Safety car deploys randomly for 2 laps during each race (SC crosses only once the start/finish line); (like lottery, only that nobody knows except race stewards). Exception: if SC was deployed before lottery-established-lap, due to an incident, then it won't deploy anymore at that given lottery-lap)
22. Teams can't change car settings during race from pit wall
23. Get more videos/interviews on the official Formula 1 web site. Each team/driver/manager/etc. has to post a video/interview of a certain length of time on the official formula 1 website.
24. Re-introduce wider front-tires?
25. Have at least two tire suppliers
26. Get more telemetry on the official Formula 1 web site

Changes that would/could reduce costs (or make no difference):
2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22
Changes that would/could raise costs:
1, 5, 11, 21, 23, 24, 25, 26

Its too long to read....I tried

But some of the ideas are good :D

Well... then please feel free to tell: wich are good/bad..!?

I got to #6 and was spent :hehe: .

 me too... actually, i think i read #1... and something about telemetry :hehe:
Gotta post these long questionos closer to the holidays :)

Or maybe use nice drawings for us ADD sufferers....
#195571
to be honest not sure i like any of them :hehe:

I belive then, you like how F1 is today... and you wouldn't change a thing.... :cloud9:

So, what realistic changes would YOU make???
#195572
less aero influence and more mechanical influence. prime ways to make passing easier. But its not an easy issue, F1 has to stay the pinnacle of motorsports. dumbing it down might make passing more prevalent but at what cost to the sports image?

less aero influence and more mechanical influence.

OK, and how would you change that...? Isn't that what was tried in the rule changes from 2009? And what happend.... Teams found so called loopholes in the regulations :banghead:
But its not an easy issue, F1 has to stay the pinnacle of motorsports.

I totally agree with that.

2. Minimum weight limit higher

Why?

3. Usage of KERS limited to a certain amount of time for the whole race (i.e. 120 seconds)
4. But using this 120 seconds without a limiter or an indicator (so, if driver miscounted and uses KERS more than the given time, he gets a penalty, say drive through)

I like it

5. One and only one engine for an entire race weekend. If engine brakes down then driver DNQ

This could mean to no Friday running and not good for friday fans

7. Stop using rev. limits

In the regs or the cars?

8. No use of telemetry at all during race for driver/team. (If something is wrong with the car, bad luck or the driver have to drive more carefully!?)

you say later that you want to see more telemetry

9. No use of radio communication between driver and team

I like to hear it on the TV feed

10. Limit the amount of personal for a whole team to a certain number

That is easy, set up another company called something else and then outsource work to them.

11. Allow refueling (you want more security: if the fueling hose is in the car, it stalls the throttle; so the driver can't drive away while refueling is taking place)

OK until you get a sensor glitch

13. Like it was some time before: on each qualifying session limit the amount of flying laps to, say 2!?
14. For each P1 on practice session, a driver can have an extra flying lap during qualifying

not sure if I like this idea or not

The only issue with this is that if a team comes up with something that is a massive advantage then they will disappear into the distance

16. Remove speed limiter for the pit lane during race/qualifying (if a driver can't estimate the max allowed speed, than bad luck and penalty)

safety issues with this

17. You want more safety: get rid of carbon brakes, they tend to 'explode'

Non Carbon brakes will making braking harder so overtaking better

Anything random that helps one team or another people are gonna think it is a setup

22. Teams can't change car settings during race from pit wall

2 way telemery has been banned for quite a while IIRC

26. Get more telemetry on the official Formula 1 web site

see number 8

2. Minimum weight limit higher
Didn't you see what happened 2009 with KERS... teams didn't use it because it was to heavy and drivers were put on a diet!

5. One and only one engine for an entire race weekend. If engine brakes down then driver DNQ
OK, let's make a "deal": One engine for Saturday and Sunday?

7. Stop using rev. limits
"In the regs or the cars?" Both I suppose...

8. Telemetry: Yes, more times and infos for the fans, but no infos for the teams --> no information whatsoever about how the car is performing, how temperatures are, etc...

9. No use of radio communication between driver and team
"I like to hear it on the TV feed" ---> I like them sometimes too. But you don't get to hear as much as like, so if you want to make racing for drivers/teams harder, forget about radio com. and use tables on pit wall instead.

10. Limit the amount of personal for a whole team to a certain number
"That is easy, set up another company called something else and then outsource work to them." --> OK, then limit the amount of personal working during a race weekend for a team (doesn't matter if a persons works for another company); limit workers in the team factory; limit workers that are working on a specific thing (doesn't matter if in the teams company or other). FIA even got to cap time on research in wind tunnel and teams are not allowed to outsource this...

11. "OK until you get a sensor glitch" ---> Come on! Nobody is perfect! Accidents happen. If you think like that, than go back to a cave!!! There is a word: PRECAUTION

15. "The only issue with this is that if a team comes up with something that is a massive advantage then they will disappear into the distance" --> Good for that team then... good work! (In the beginning of 2009 there where 3 teams with double diffusers.... so Williams and Toyota could have catch up...) (This year the f-duct is maybe a bit better to have, but not necessarily)

16. Lower the speed limit to say 40... and apply hard penalties if you drive faster. How much faster do you think drivers are going to drive? say 80? just like it is now -> no safety issue here.

21. "people are gonna think it is a setup" ---> Maybe...

22. My mistake.

Cool I see your reasoning

5. One and only one engine for an entire race weekend. If engine brakes down then driver DNQ
OK, let's make a "deal": One engine for Saturday and Sunday?

Done

7. Stop using rev. limits
"In the regs or the cars?" Both I suppose...

I mean as in a regs restriction as we have now, or that the car will stop the driver from over revving the engine. I think the driver giving it a few more revs to pass but at the cost of shortening the engines life would be good

It is easier to hear what is being said than trying to read a pit board. maybe an onscreen display of what the pit board is saying cold help this.

If last year you where not one of the teams that came up with the DDD why would you bother racing for the rest of the year. Plus how boring would last year of been if Redbull could not of added one.
