The 2010 British Grand Prix will take place on Silverstone’s new ‘Arena’ circuit in 2010, the circuit has confirmed, after gaining approval from Formula One Management.

The race organisers say the new circuit, built at a cost of £5m, will provide a better experience for fans in 2010.

It cuts out the Abbey chicane and Bridge and Priory corners, replacing them with a new sequence of fast bends and a pair of tight corners which will be in view from the Becketts grandstand. The new configuration will have to be homologated by the FIA before this year’s F1 race.

Here’s how the new and old tracks compare:
Track Silverstone ‘Arena’ (2010) Silverstone 2009
Length 5.9km (3.666 miles) 5.14km (3.194 miles)
Turns (R/L) 18 (10/8) 17 (10/7)

With the lap length increasing expect the number of laps in this year’s F1 race to fall from 60 to 52.

The estimated lap time for the new circuit in an F1 car is 1′23.13. Last year’s pole position time by Sebastian Vettel was 1′19.509.

A new pit and paddock complex will be built in time for the 2011 race. It will include new garages, race control building, media centre, hospitality, VIP spectator areas and a primary paddock.

Managing director Richard Phillips said:
"The new sections of circuit were initially brought in to comply with Moto GP safety regulations, but the ‘Arena Complex’ was always designed with both two and four-wheeled racing in mind. We have been very careful, working closely with drivers and riders, to make sure we are improving and enhancing what Silverstone already has to offer – from a drivers, riders and spectators point of view.

Some will miss not seeing modern day F1 cars accelerating through Bridge, but we have to move with the times and continue looking at ways to improve the overall experience. The new layout will bring an extra dimension to Silverstone, a new challenge for the drivers, and will enable fans to get closer to the action. We have a very exciting year ahead of us, with F1, MotoGP and World Superbikes all coming to Silverstone, and I can’t wait to see how the drivers and riders tackle the new circuit."

Silverstone is one of two F1 circuits changes this year – Bahrain is also using a new loop for this year’s race.

This will make the average speed of the lap about 255km/h (nearly 160 mph) if their lap predictions are right :eek:

But its better with the new track because Bridge was an easy corner even in the wet and there's no chicanes.

Damon Hill's comments are stupid:

ilverstone's new 'Arena' layout is not exciting enough, according to the president of the British Racing Drivers' Club the owners of the circuit.

It was announced Thursday that the new 760 meter loop, featuring effectively two new infield straights in the place of the famous 'Bridge' corner section, will be used for July's British Grand Prix.

But 1996 world champion Hill said the addition, designed for the arrival of the MotoGP race, is a "frustrating compromise" that risks "destroying the essence of what brought fans to Formula One in the first place".

"If you are asking me to say it's fantastic, I'm afraid I am not going to do that," he is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

"I am not satisfied that we
will be providing the best facility we could," the Briton added.

Hill said the Arena layout is a compromise due to the Northamptonshire facility's financial position.

"It is fast, exciting corners that drivers love. It is what fans love. So, it's illogical not to concentrate on developing the sporting challenge," he continued.

"I have the idea of my perfect, fantasy track and that's not what we are building," said Hill.

Bridge is a crap corner ever since the Abbey chicane was put in and they're not losing Becketts or Copse

Nah bridge is great an anything other than a recent F1 car. Also as bridge was quite easy flat for recent F1 cars, they were able to take more and more extreme lines into the following right hander. Watching from just after bridge on test days was always spectacular. The way the compression affects slower cars through bridge (particularly during the Silverstone Classic) makes it really challenging and crazily, it is somewhere where you could overtake.

They should just restore the classic layout for which Keke Rosberg set the fastest lap speed record and held it for 17 years until Mr Chubby came along.

My favourite is the 1967 layout with the proper Woodcote. I like the current (2009) layout too for high downforce cars, the complex is a bit clumsy but i like the technical aspect of it and you can go side by side through several consecutive corners there

Silverstone has some of the best corners in F1 but the end of the lap has some of the worst.

Not possible because there's a grandstand right where the old Becketts. That layout wasn't particularly exciting, just fast.

Hey you kids can argue amongst yourselves via PM and the forum rules/guidelines; viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2216 .

Should you have an issue with another member, don't fight it out on the forums. Ninety percent of the time it will be a misunderstanding, and nothing that cannot be resolved with a well placed "emoticon". Despite this, I am overcome with conviction that those two are the same person.
