I was just reading this weeks Autosport and I noticed a letter in the back. saying as Bernie has tried the medal points system again and no one listened. How about trying a decathalon points system?

I had to check up on what the point system was and I think it has some merit.

The Winner of the race gets some points (say 90 to keep with the decathalon heratige) Points are then lost for how far you are behind the winner. However when I read into it a bit more some people award point to everyone other award 0 points for last place and then people inbetween gets a percentage of the points inbetween.

example

The person who finishes last passes the line 45 seconds after the winner.

the winner gets 90 point
the last person get 0 point
the person in second crosses the line 1 second after the winner. so gets 90*(44/45) 88 points

The plus point of this is that drivers will want to be as close to first place as possible. Also the driver in 1st will want to be as far ahead of everyone else to get the maximum difference in points.

The concluding sentence makes it sound good, but it'd be a stupidly high points system.

I suppose you would need a big load of point otherwise if you got 10 points for 1st and 0 for last and the difference was 45s again. You could be up to 4.5 seconds behing the leader and still get 10 points

Maybe could work.
I'm in!!!

Good that crashers are punished.
But would they be if it was on the last lap?
What do people laps down get?

I think the points system does need to change. We used to go through the 80's with just a couple of points positions.. then finally expanded in the 90's and 00's

I would say the FOTA system would do, plus one extra point given to the man on pole in quali, and another for the man who gets fastest lap.

That would push a driver to his limits trying to be the fastest out there (not that they do already)

Plus this refuelling ban would be a good thing for the pole position point. You can't fuel yourself light to get pole any more... so pole position gets a point! simples

What do you guys think of that?

that is down to the last driver not to be lapped. if your lapped it is nil points also.

cool

the only downside to this I can see is if everyone in the field gets lapped. then the winner gets 90 points but no one else will

He must have driven well
