Former world champion Kimi Raikkonen will take a sabbatical from Formula 1 next year, his manager has revealed, following the collapse of talks with McLaren about a deal for 2010.

Raikkonen said last month that, in the wake of being released from his Ferrari contract, his only option to remain in F1 was with McLaren - because he wanted to be guaranteed a top-line grand prix car.

However, amid increasing speculation that Jenson Button is on his way to the British team, Raikkonen's manager Steve Robertson revealed on Tuesday night that discussions with McLaren had come to an end.

"The options in F1 were with McLaren next season or not at all," Robertson was quoted as saying by respected Finnish newspaper Turun Sanomat, which has close links with the Raikkonen camp. "Kimi and McLaren were unable to reach an agreement, so he will not drive at the F1 level - at least not next year.

"A gap year means nothing for Kimi. He is more interested in fighting for wins and the world championship. F1 will miss Kimi. He worked hard over the summer - doing things in a Ferrari that only the best drivers are capable of."

AUTOSPORT understands that there were several stumbling blocks to a deal being completed with McLaren prior to the team finding out that Button was available and interested.

As well as a difference of opinion about wages, Raikkonen and McLaren were believed to not be in agreement about the number of sponsorship appearance days he should do, or about how free he was to do rallies.

With Raikkonen only interested in returning to F1 in a race-winning car, his best option for 2011 would appear to lie with Red Bull Racing - which has a theoretical vacancy for 2011 with Mark Webber currently only contracted until the end of next year.

Although it is not clear what Raikkonen will do next year, it is possible that he will focus his efforts on the World Rally Championship – while he sorts out an F1 return. Red Bull could be involved in his rally plans too.

:(:( I hope he comes back. Gotta love the mentality here though, many drivers would have taken a drive in a slow car just to stick around.

Sad news I will miss him but this means that McLaren's line up is all but confirmed unless Heidfeld some how ends up with the seat yet I don't remember Heidfeld getting a tour of Woking!

Crap. :(

This is shaping up to be the worst pre-season in my memory.

Seriously - how can the equal best driver on the grid (on par with Alonso) not be driving next year? With him gone, I doubt he'll be back. What a crying shame! :irked:

So no more Kimi I doubt he will come back after a year off! I mean really you'd want to stay in the cockpit in 2010 even if it were for a crappy team, if you had plans for a 2011 top team!

This is awful. One of the great drivers....lost to some BS. People always knocked him for not being super excited about wining and press events or interviews but at the end of the day he was better than almost all of the drivers. If not all. Just a shame.

I would guess the only way Kimi will get back into f1 is if the likes of red bull or merc gp are near the front of the grid. Can't see ferrari wanting him back as they've ditched him this year.If the rumours of Button joining McLaren are true (looking likely now) they're saying a three year contract and unlike ferrari they won't pay a driver off.

I think he only has himself to blame with his I don't care attitude, but thats just the way he is I guess.

Hello, yes also in japan they say that kimi not race next year, not nice that such a good driver not be in f1 next year many people here are sorry if this happen.
they also say in car tv programe that renault want to sell the team and there are two group that want to buy, 1 from russia and 1 from germany and that it is more posible they sell about half 40%-50% of team to group from russia but this is not sure, and in 1 max 2 year sell rest of renault f1 team and leve  .

I'm gutted - but Raikkonen has looked bored the last few years. He's a real adrenaline junky who lives life to the full, and if I find F1 dull, you can only imagine how Kimi feels. :banghead:

Best of luck to him in 2010 though - perhaps he should replace Eddie Jordan as a BBC presenter? :hehe:

Didn't Mika Hakkinen take a sabbatical, and not come back??

Its a Finnish thing.

Yep He went to DTM.

might no fin's in F1 next year if Hekki don't get a drive.

Hekki needs to act more like Kimi, even if he can't drive like him.

Good bye Iceman :(

Perhaps but i wouldn't want him to change.

He leaves F1 after being in nothing but top teams for the past few years he can hold his head high and show up a french person now.
