This is just a pointless thread to whine about the measures in place by the NSW Government that prevent me, 19 years old and living on my own, from driving a car.

I have to do 120 hours with someone sitting next to me, before I get off my Ls. Considering that an instructor will cost me $50 per hour, it's bloody ridiculous. No one in my family drives, but they don't live near me anyway...

To add to that there is a speed limit restriction of 80km/h, where everyone else is going 110km/h. The same rule applies for Learner Motorcycle Riders. Wake up you idiots - young people are dying because you are making us drive too F***ING SLOW!!!! :censored::thumbdown::irked::banghead:

When I'm 30 I will not be able to drive my family anywhere... but it doesn't matter because I can't drive to a restaurant to date a girl. What the bloody hell am I supposed to do!? The only way for me to get off my Ls is to marry some chick with her full license. For me to get a mate to do 120 hours with me is bloody ridiculous.

You could always move to the US, you know the place that's always being chastised by everyone who secretly wants to live here :D , and be driving within a few months without all those rediculous restrictions, just a thought :P !

 A few lesson's on the street mate and maybe a few in the kart to hone those skills would be a fantastic "driving school"! :drink:

If only I did, because it used to be "only" 50 hours.

120 hours?! That's rather a lot. When I learnt to drive I did a lesson a week for a few of months, straight into the test and voila, all done.

The speed restriction sounds dangerous. I wouldn't particularly like pondering around at 50mph with everyone zooming past me going 70mph

That sucks, $6k to pass your driving test? You could get a solid car for that sort of money! I bet if you offered a mate even half the money they'd bite your hand off...

That's a point, how can they know when you've completed 120 hours if you learn with a mate/family member? I'm sure you can blag this one.

well the media and goverments are hot to trot on P Platers and young drivers driving recklessly drag racing etc. I know they are also bringing in KW limits for p platers so no V8s or Turbo charged cars for the kids.

Is drag racing etc a big problem? Are p platers learners, or new drivers? I can sort of understand why they want to bring rules in regarding bigger engines (some people are calling for the same over here) but I dislike tarring everyone with the same brush. There are plenty of young drivers who can handle power, much like there are plenty of older drivers who can't.

I know, R drivers in the UK are told they are never allowed to exceed 45mph. Geez, if I obeyed that law I can't imagine how many pissed of motorists I'd have behind me.

As for insurance, it's bad in the UK. But in Northern Ireland, it's even worse than anywhere I know off. Friends of mine were getting quoted at least £3000 per year. That's for barely ever driving 1.2 litre hatchback. It's cause nearly all insurance companies in the UK won't cover Northern Ireland, and the ones that do, get away with charging murderous prices. :banghead:

There's no R drivers in England its just Northern Ireland mate.

‘R’ plate rules

After passing the driving test for a motor car or motorcycle, you must display amber ‘R’ plates for a period of one year from the date of passing the test.

The plates MUST conform to legal specifications and MUST be clearly visible to others from in front of the vehicle and from behind. Plates should be removed or covered when not being driven by a restricted driver.

The maximum permitted speed for any vehicle displaying R plates is 45 mph, irrespective of whether or not the vehicle is being driven by a restricted driver.
If you are a new resident in Northern Ireland who applies for a provisional driving licence and passes the Northern Ireland driving test within 12 months of becoming resident, you may be exempt from the requirement to display 'R' Plates if you hold a full licence which currently permits you to drive for up to 12 months in Northern Ireland. DVA will require proof of the date on which you became resident in Northern Ireland.

My cousin passed before me and could only drive around at 45mph for a year when i past straight to 70mph.

You can do 70 on your first lesson if the instructor lets you (in the UK). I remember tackling the dual carriage way on my 2nd or 3rd lesson, I got told off for going too slow and not overtaking  Thank God we don't have R plates.
