F1live:
Williams has agreed to drop its plans to use a Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) in 2010.

Despite the technology again appearing in the technical regulations for next year, the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) had reached a gentleman's agreement to drop KERS after the forthcoming season finale in Abu Dhabi.

The fiercely independent Grove-based team Williams, however, was suspended by FOTA amid the recent breakaway war and was therefore not technically bound by the other member teams' pacts.

Moreover, the British squad - although not using KERS at all this season - has been a strong advocate of the energy recovery technology, jointly developing an electrical as well as an uniquely flywheel-based system.

Engineering director and co-owner Patrick Head told the German website motorsport-total.
com that at the last meeting of the technical working group, Williams was the only team still wanting to use KERS in 2010.

After that, Williams was invited to re-enter the FOTA alliance.

"We were conscious that one of the conditions was that KERS is not permitted in 2010," the Briton said. "We expressed that we think it is the wrong decision, but accept the rules of the club."

Disapointing, I guess I was looking forward to see Williams' KERS.

It's a shame, but at least Williams had other plans of introducing it in buses and trains etc. Maybe they could always develop it in an F1 car with something like an interim FW31 and do various Airfield tests with Dickie Stanford and the test team just to prove it's worth and possibly bring about a resurrection of KERS in the future.

What will EJ find next year to moan about? He'll probably miss it if anything. :hehe:

have the new teams all signed up to FOTA? one of them might sneak it in

I believe they have all signed up but even if KERS was allowed I would not expect to see it on one of the new teams unless Cosworth made it because it's so expensive to develop it. McLaren spent £70 million and Renault spent something like £30 million those new teams just don't have the budget.

I still don't get it. Is McLaren going to use KERS in 2010 or not? What's the future for KERS

Well apparently KERS is over. Kinda sad in a way. Kinda not.

So McLaren put a big amount of money for this KERS for nothing practically?

KERS is a great idea but is it too much in it's infancy for F1?

Kers is absolutely essential for the future of F1.
There is no other technology that places F1 as the pinnacle of vehicle technology as the EV revolution takes us into a new era of motoring. Aerodynamics and IC technology can only hope for variations on the same theme of the last thirty years within tight regulations. Without Kers FI will be as good as obsolete in six Months.
Fota was set up for the benefit of the big car manufacturer teams and it's hypocrisy is now obvious because most of the original members are leaving F1 or have already gone for the very reasons they opposed the FIA, Costs!!!!
Kers is open for development outside cost restraints by companies who could capitalize from the technology in road vehicles and use F1 Marketing and media coverage world wide to promote it.
Fota teams do not want this as they are now making money from their F1 Kers development in road cars. They are preventing others developing superior systems to theirs by forcing the technology out of F1. It was one of the main reason for Fota in the first place.
They will not succeed, as the truth will be out. Kers will be back with far superior systems that will force the fossil fuel users think again. Such superior systems are already being worked up. F1 will be nothing in the future without it.
