Lewis reckons his KERS is worth about 0.4secs a lap, which shows how far his car was off the pace at the start of the year. Ive heard it said that KERS drivers have an unfair advantage. I dont think so. they have an advantage in some areas but they are disadvantaged in others. And the time spent developing KERS has meant hat other areas where bigger gains could have been made were compromised.
Anyway a couple of snippets about Lewis and KERS in the last two races. I wouldnt say KERS is an easy ride after reading them!!
Singapore
Lap 5 "Lewis disable the KERS, default X30"
The coolant pump had stopped working.Had it not been disabled it would have overheated and caught fire.Hamilton's crew talked him through a series of options on his steering wheel turning it on and off until it kicked back in. Then more button pressing to re-engagr the KERS. During this computer programming session, Lewis incresed his laptime by HALF A SECOND!!
Suzuka
More KERS problems. Hamilton was compromised by a malfunctioning KERS, not only did he lose the extra power but also had to adapt his driving style to cope with an accompanying change in brake bias.
This problem was different to Singapore. It was an insulation problem in the motor. When this is detected KERS is automatically switched off otherwie it can spread from the windings to the casing and then the chassis, and its 700volts. They didnt dare risk tuning it on so from lap 37 he was KERSless.
But what a driver!!
