Changes to qualifying in 2010 rules

By Simon Strang Wednesday, August 19th 2009, 17:35 GMT

The FIA's new sporting and technical regulations for the 2010 Formula 1 world championship, published today, feature changes to the qualifying procedure to accommodate the expected 26-car grid next year.

The hour-long session will still be split into three segments, but will now see the slowest eight dropped in the opening 20-minute Q1 session, and another eight in Q2 to allow for 10 drivers to contest the shoot-out over 10 minutes.

Moreover, in a move that will please fans, Q3 will now be run in low-fuel configuration with the regulations taking into account the re-fuelling ban for 2010.

Other significant points in the document, posted on the FIA's website, include a continuation of the current points system, as opposed to Bernie Ecclestone's previously mooted winner-takes-all medals scheme.

Each car's minimum weight has been raised to 620kg, to take into account the added weight of KERS - which will still be allowed under next year's regulations, despite FOTA's agreement not to use the system.

Tyre warmers will also be allowed, despite previous indications that they would be banned on cost-saving grounds.

The re-written regulations also no longer contain any reference to the proposals for a two-tier Formula 1, that was at the centre of the row between the sport's governing body and the Formula One Teams' Association prior to the signing of the tri-partite Concord Agreement last month.

So it basically seems like cost-cutting is no longer flavour of the month! :hehe:

Tell you what, qualifying is going to be incredible next season if the entire field remains as close as it has been this year! :yikes:

Excellent news. I'm especially pleased that Ecclestone's absurd medals system will not be introduced and that real qualifying is back.

looks like being green is not flavour of the month either with the whole grid running in Q1 for 20 whole minutes :)

NO!

Get rid of tyre warmers. They are just not needed. Both GP2 and F1 will run extremely similar rules next year. In both series, normal quali will be run, the cars will be fuelled to the finish, and just have to stop for tyres. The only difference really, is that GP2 runs a reverse grid 2nd race, doesn't use tyre warmers.

Really, cold tyres are good for action in the early stages of a race. So I'm all for banning them.

But aside from that, the changes are stuff we already knew. Its still all good

OK so they do ban them for next year. Piquet might end up driving for one of the back marker teams.

first corner of the First lap of the first race. Piquet drives up to the corner thinks he can break as late as this year. which is about 100 meters after he should do, at which point he flys through the field destroying every other car on the track as he does so. the podium will be Force India 1st and 2nd and then Manor GP 3rd. because they where the only car to finish the first lap.

half of me actually likes the jumbled up grid, with the aero the way it is, and the fastest cars upp front, and no refuel, might it be a literal procession every race? same fuel, fastest cars starting from front, still no overtaking?

i hope im wrong, just thinking aloud

I think when the cars are at their lightest, a driver can make the difference more than the car.

Hopefully the fuel tanks will be made to the right size so that drivers will have to drive certain parts of the race economically whilst their rival has got the bit between his teeth.

And maybe we might see a repeat of the finish to Imola 1985 or Monaco 1982. :hehe:
