I worked with a guy that was part of a team of mathematicians in charge of calculating the re-entry angle back into earth's atmosphere for Apollo 11.

He retired a few years ago, was one of the brightest guys I've ever encountered professionally.

EDIT: listened to the entire thing. First time I've ever heard that, thanks for the share. It was exciting.
