Lewis Hamilton on Thursday said he would miss his colleague Pedro de la Rosa if the Spanish test driver leaves McLaren at the end of 2009.

"I always wish him all the best because he is a great team-mate," the reigning world champion said of de la Rosa, 38.

"If he decided to leave the team I would miss him because he is a pleasure to work with, he's funny, he's a hard worker and he is supportive even in the most difficult moments.

"I would like him to stay," Hamilton added on a PR visit to Spain.

The McLaren driver's comments come amid reports that the new Spanish Formula One team, Campos-Dallara, is readying to announce at least one of its race drivers for the 2010 season at the European Grand Prix in Valencia next month.

Team chief Adrian Campos had earlier indicated that Spaniards including de la Rosa, Marc Gene, Javi Villa and Roldan Rodriguez are all candidates.

"I will speak with them," he said last month. "I will try to support Spanish drivers, but that does not mean that anyone is going to drive for us just because he is Spanish."

Campos should get Javier Villa in.

But if they wanted experience I suppose De La Rosa or Gene would be their best bet.

Or Alonso... :hehe:

I think Campos ran Gene in his earlier career, but i can't see him leaving Ferrari strangely enough, even for a race seat elsewhere.

Gene has it quite sweet. Commentary job at the GP, Ferrari test seat (the new Badoer :hehe: ) and a successful Sportscar career so far.

I'm sure Adrian Campos would love Alonso as would the Spanish people, especially that La Sexta commentator Lobato... but I doubt Alonso would want Campos. :hehe:

I think it's good that de la Rosa moves on. It's clear McLaren are not willing to offer him a race seat and that there are better, much younger talents knocking about. Moreover, I've not forgotten the shame he brought on McLaren as a result of his role in the spy scandal. He should have been dismissed in 2007.

I dont even know why Mclaren chose to sit de la Rosa out, he did well on the few races he had for Mclaren, and Heikki has been doing terrible.
Its probably because of the spy incident... but anyway he deserves at least a possibility, not the blank NO he's gotten at McL.

What have you been smoking. Villa!!! :hehe:

I think De La Rosa might be a good bet for some teams. Ignore the nationality thing, these new teams are completely going to unsure about F1 so they need an experienced hand to help with car development. They need someone who can drive the car, and then comeback and tell the team exactly what its doing and what needs done.

I think Christian Klien should get a seat this year. He has enough experience and speed to be a real asset to a new team.

I bet you he'll get in on an account of his nationality  at somepoint in the future

He is but he is also hillarious. I seen him at Silverstone when waiting around for Brundle and that. I shouted at him.. He gave me a look as if he was saying "wtf how do you know who I am?"

McLaren bottled it last season. Perhaps having de la Rosa driving for the team would have looked bad, but another driver could have been drafted in to make a better go at things. It may have cost the team several million dollars, but the moneys would have been recouped by winning the constructors' title.
