Something that didn't really come to light this year, was the intended renovation of the Silverstone circuit.

A simulation for this new layout was on hand this weekend at silverstone.

They plan to create new pit buildings, and also move them. So the start line will now be moved between club and abbey. Then a new infield section will be added, with a large straight about the same length as the hangar straight, into braking for brooklands. That straight will become the easiest place to overtake on the circuit.

So no more abbey chicane, or priory, or bridge. Hopefully then we'll actually be returning to Silverstone next year, since it'll be interesting if these changes go ahead.

Hmm they don't really need to change the layout at all IMO just replace the current pit buildings with new more modern ones.

I'd agree with that in principal. However it wouldn't be cost effective to do so. Like Donington, Silverstone couldn't shut down for a long period, without racing action, to rebuild the pitlane.

The circuit and pit buildings are fine as they are, no need for Hermann Tilke to come and mutilate another circuit into crappiness.

Personally I think the changes are quite good. Silverstone has gone under tonnes of changes throughout the years anyway.

There aren't any key corners that are going missing. Bridge isn't really a corner, more of an approach. I think the changes will greatly improve overtaking, without ruining the feel of the track. The new corners stay with the fast flow of the track. The main corners like Stowe, maggots, becketts, and copse are all still there.

I don't know about that, Abbey Chicane was excellent for overtaking. And from the proposals, rejoining the national track and carrying on down to the existing complex doesn't really strike me as an overtaking spot.

That's just an opinion, I may be wrong.

Getting rid of Bridge is so, so lame. Next they'll be putting a chicane at Copse ffs

Silverstone chiefs the BRDC, have revealed a new £45 million infield complex aimed at making the Northamptonshire circuit "the best in the world". The changes - funded by the BRDC, leaseholders Octogan and Bernie Ecclestone - will be ready for the 2003 season.

Described as the biggest makeover in 52 years, Sir Jackie Stewart, President of the BRDC and Rob Bain, Chief Executive of Octagon Motorsports, hailed the master plan as "a revolutionary step forward for British Motorsport". Both expressed their confidence that by 2003 Silverstone would be competing at a world-class level, with state-of-the-art facilities for the media, teams and spectators.

Renowned circuit specialist Hermann Tilke, who designed Malaysia's Sepang circuit, has designed the new layout, which sees the track turn right and bypass the Abbey chicane into a new infield section. However, the most dramatic changes will involve shifting the pits complex to a new position on the straight linking Club and Abbey corners, while oval-style banking will be added to Club corner itself to provide an added dimension to racing.

The new infield will be formed by joining the straights on the national and international circuits, bypassing the challenging Bridge corner altogether.

The new pit buildings will be dedicated Formula 1 facilities, with the grandstands on the current start-finish straight moved to face them. The old pits and pit lane will be retained for all other forms of racing, however.

The changes are part of a £95 million package designed to safeguard the future of the British Grand Prix. The BRDC is expected to lobby the government for a further £40 million to help create a national centre of excellence for motor racing and provide a link road to the new bypass.

Can't get much worse than Silverstone...! talking about the circuit itself and potential for good racing that is.

I agree with you Scotty, I think the new layout at Donington has alot of potential, especially in comparison to these proposals

Silverstones had loads of good races. All the races this year have been crap, its not the track its the regs. Donnington's too little.
