Depends what you mean by 'no special connections', otherwise, in reality, hard work and being the best of the best can get you there... that's my plan! :)

Like for example NPJ became a driver down to his father so like if anyone you know has had dealings with the team before!

So what are you career path are you choosing?

There's more to Piquet getting in to Formula One than having a famous father.

Most of the guys in Formula One at the moment started out in a smaller racing series and worked their way up to the top, I think.

Right, i get you.

Me personally, i'm going to study Motorsport Engineering at uni soon (a uni that has lots of motorsports links!), making it as a driver is probably no longer possible for me.... although maybe one day in the BTCC or something. :P

To Be perfectly honest with you, getting to F1 is easy if you have the determination but you will have to put blood sweat and tears, plus getting sponsorship is no easy deal. I have had karting experience and numerous tests in a Formula Ford car and FPA car, I have made connections but that does not help at all, only when you get it to the top. You need an awesome business mind and need to offer something no one else on this planet can, I am looking into going to management soon as I have helped a new Formula Ford aspiring driver clinch a sponsorship deal with my idea. Plus you have to be reckonised early on and have something about you?

· Valnetino Rossi – he had a new style and was ‘funky’ with his clothes and colors! Yellow or lime green? He stood out.
· Lewis Hamilton was a born winner from an average struggling family with a heart of gold.
· Nico Rosberg had an opportunity to attend University with a Mechanics degree but turned it down, plus to be a driver for Williams you have to pass a test of Mechanics etc!

Also, just think of all the drivers fighting for that one spot it is near enough impossible! Plus with the economic situation, it only makes life worse! Formula one is all the drivers dreams, the only thing I could say is head to Indy, as that is a little more easier to get accepted into! Formula One is too hard and too money orientated!

Sorry to squash your dream, but I have tried on 3 occasions! The best I have done is get an Indy Lite test with Panther Racing! Because I’m fiends with K Losch and the owner of PR

Good Luck Though

Go to local businesses and offer you to them say you will work for the sponsorship! that would be giving them something back!

You might be a little old if you've never done karting since you said you were 16 and most Kids starting karting at 8-10

But for a driver route your best trying Go Karting and if you good enter semi-pro events then if your really good get lucky with a Formula Renault, or BMW team and go though GP2 or F2 etc..

But for the Engineer side its Collage then Uni hope you like Physics ;) then or perhaps try an appentership though collage as a trainee mechanic for a motorsports team.

Regards to that; - Damon Hill never did Karting! Racing School -
There are many Racing School etc. that could help your skills then I would advise a Scholarship season in Formula Ford then maybe a Full season after that, then I would jump to FPA then F2 that will be the shortest route you will ever find, as if you win FPA you win 50,000 quid for your F2 campaign then if you win F2 you gain a test at Williams!

Yeh but he did motorbike racing and had connections though that.

He's also a one off case really.

Formula Ford is pretty expensive and no ones going to sponsorship you unless you are good.

- yeah your right Damon was a 1 off, plus with his Dads name 8-) -
Formula Ford is 40,000 a year in which i don't think is that bad, FPA though is only 50,000? so you make your choice! but to be honest getting sponsorship is not that hard if you have the right day and right head on in that day, Motor Sport has major parts playing in'it and as DC said, Luck is one of them!

Formula Renault costs 20K more, the average season costs 60K a year.
Pus if you look at names such as James Walker he started from nothing, he started in Formula Ford in the Scholar class and now is in the World Series For Renault!
