Flavio Briatore could buy Renault's Formula One team and continue to run it in 2010 and beyond, according to media reports.

The reports, in Italy's Autosprint and also carried by the Dutch publication Formule 1 Race Report, tie in with persistent rumours that the French carmaker is contemplating pulling out of the sport at the end of this season.

It is suggested that, amid the slump in new car sales, three seasons of average race results, the expiring contract of title sponsor ING, and the likely departure of Fernando Alonso, Renault - already threatening to quit over the Max Mosley rules dispute - is set to decide the time is right to step out.

The specialist magazine Autosprint said Renault, who currently also supply customer V8s to Red Bull Racing, may continue to supply engines.

Romain Grosjean, Renault's high profile reserve driver, is mentioned as a likely driver for a Briatore-branded entrant.

shame Renault is pulling out, will we loose another engine supplier?

the way its going were gonna have Merc vs Ferrari vs Cosworth.

- with the rumours of BMW and Toyota leaving.

that Merc engine is gonna be in demand.

well according to this they would still supply Redbull and the current Renault team.

and i do rekn Briatore will return the team to the Benetton name, afterall he owned this team before the Renault buy out.

Not sure he'll be able to use Benetton unless they get permission from the Benetton Group.

Perhaps name the team like his boat "force somthing" perhaps "force flav"
:hehe:

hmmm maybe not just read that Flav was fired by Rocco Benetton so might still be some bad blood there. well if not Benetton what about Tyrell the teams original identity? I would prefer some historical significance compared to Briatore F1 or something like that.... but then wouldnt that kind of name be diluting the sport of F1 Flav? :hehe:

Isnt Tyrell what is now Brawn GP?

i read that Ross brawn was even going to call Brawn GP Tyrell

Renault F1 is what was Toleman and Spirit, if he renamed it to Toleman it would be cool

With my current dislike for the way the manufacturers are conducting themselves; I would welcome Briatore GP or whatever is the name transpires to be; another independent would be good! Brawn were formerly Honda and before that BAR, which was formed around Jacques Villeneuve from scratch. I am pretty sure that BAR didn't take over another team, but of course my memory could be deceiving me!

How weird I was just re-searching Flavio Briatore? I think Benetton can more than afford it; thee Revenue in 2008 was $2.1 Billion plus Flavio is still a major share holder in the group plus he is still a share holder of the Renault group and Formula one team. So it would be in his greatest of interests to get Benetton in. With this he could double his money? Plus Renault could go back to there famous Blue and Yellow

Tyrrell...

Toleman were a Formula 2 outfit that was sold to Benetton who pulled out when they realised that it wasn't selling anymore pullovers as a result of being there.

Thus Briatore F1 is as good as any other name but as that could be seen by it's owner as devaluing the sport (as oppose to having a team in it named after a pullover manufacturer or a car delivery firm) perhaps he should consider using a name from Italian motor racing history.

He'll probably just flog the naming rights to the highest bidder in the end.

After he's got some free publicity out of mentioning Schumacher's name several times 1st though.

Tyrrell...

I thought that Tyrrell had long gone by the time that BAR turned up. But if I am incorrect; I stand corrected, my memory isn't what it used to be!

Yeah its Tyrrell, and as Longbow said in the latest F1racing magazine Brawn contemplated naming the team just that in memory of its origins.

Tyrrell's last race was the final GP of 1998 & BAR's the 1st of '99 but given how the team was performing in it's death throes you might be forgiven for having missed them for a few years.
