The drivers love it, the media love it and some fans love it, but I hate it, it is the Monaco GP.

I can see why the drivers might like it, half of them live or have homes there, and the challenge for a driver is very high. From a media or corporate entertainment point of view, Monaco is easy to get to, and a chance to show off a bit, especially if you have a boat. Fans get closer to the track than at most GP as well.

But, as a race, it's a disaster! I mean, virtually no overtaking, take the safety manual and throw it out the window, and with the proposed (and this may have been dropped already, I don't know) refuelling ban from next year, this race is going to really suck, not as a spectacle, just as a race.

I watched quali, and at the point my interest stopped, and although I watched the race, barring mechanical failure or the odd accident, was largely unsurprised by the result. (although very pleased for Braun/Button of course)

Maybe Monaco does have glitz and glamour, but it certainly does not have a race :(

The Monaco Grand Prix is an annual event, so I think it should be on the calendar. Moreover, you're missing some of what Formula One is. First, it's pretty exciting to watch cars being threaded through the barriers. Second, Formula One is also about glitz and glamour, and Monaco is the epitome of this.

What I would not like to see is more street races. Monaco's prestige and uniqueness should be retained.

I did acknowledge in my original post that the track is challenging, which is why the drivers like it. I just feel it is not a 'race' once the quali is over.

For me, F1 is about the cars and drivers, not glitz and glamour. It's only as the money started to come in to F1 from TV and sponsors that those elements entered. And to be honest, the playboy images of the drivers has gone anyway, now that drivers have to be superfit athletes, they are all in bed by 10pm, not nightclubbing and taking home 3 birds each for a night of umpalumpa and drugs, unless you are kimi of course :)

The Monaco track defies everything that F1 has been fighting for, overtaking, more excitement etc.

No, it's a unique circuit and unique challenge. If all the tracks where the same style, then it would be boring. You need a bit of change.

But none the less, Monaco has been around for 80 years. To remove it now would be an outrage. It's a track thats always has been here, and always will. True it offers some poor racing. 2007 being the worst offender. But every now and again you get something spectacular to watch. Like last year.

True it takes a car that's about 4 seconds faster to overtake. But Monaco is still special. Button was saying that there was a Marshal, just sitting on one of the barriers, inchs from the cars racing. I mean, where else would you get that today. The cars park on front of the royal box, and receive the trophy from Prince Albert. Unless your Button. It's just those things that make Monaco different, unique and special.

Monaco is two extremes - boring procession, or race of the season. It's worth it for the epic races, when they do come along...

Plus, if Monaco went, F1 would completely lose any sense of tradition that is left!

Besides, the rest of them can't really be considered street races in the sense that Monaco is. They're wider, they have run-off areas and, generally, they lack the challenge that Monaco has. In Monaco, the driver has to be concentrating fully for 100% of the lap. At Valencia, if he makes a mistake going in to one of the turns, he's probably going to be able to slow down on the run-off area and rejoin the track.

If the Valencia race proves boring this year, I wouldn't mind seeing it removed from the calendar. I think Singapore is much better anyway and even if it doesn't provide massive amounts of excitement, the fact that it is a night race as well does add something to the atmosphere. And you have to admit, the cars do look good under the lights :)

Monaco is a must, the most intact of all the classic races, arguably the last surviving link to F1's origins

If any of the 'classic' tracks should have stayed, just for nostalgia reasons then that track must surely be Nürburgring. From a 'race' point of view Monaco is the worst track in terms of overtaking drama, I agree it takes a certain skill to be quick aqround the circuit.

Not true. There were more passes in Monaco than there were in Spain ;)
