F1live:
When Nick Heidfeld completed the Spanish Grand Prix, it was the 25th consecutive race to see him reach the finish line. By doing so, the German broke fellow countryman and seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher's now-former record.

Adding icing to the cake - literally - Heidfeld signed the accomplishment on his 32nd birthday.

The landmark not only shows the BMW Sauber driver's consistent performance, but also the strength and reliability of the team's cars.

The last time Nick Heidfeld failed to reach the finish line dates back to the Japanese Grand Prix of the 2007 season, when a technical issue forced him to stop on the side of a drenched Fuji Speedway with only two laps to go.

Since then, Heidfeld saw the chequered flag at the remainder of the 2007 season, the entirety of the 2008 championship, and at every race so far this year.

"I would like to say a big thank you to the BMW Sauber F1 Team for the stability of the car, which obviously played a major role in this record," Heidfeld acknowledged.

This speaks volumes for the BMW Sauber reliability. However, despite his recent success, Heidfeld is yet to win a race during his nine seasons in Formula One. This means that amongst the current drivers, he has had the most GP starts without standing at the top spot on the podium. Heidfeld has now started over 150 races, so if he were to eventually win a race he would break the record for most starts before a maiden victory. This is currently held by Rubens Barrichello, who claimed his first victory on his 123rd attempt. Heidfeld also currently holds three other dubious records; he is the driver who has scored the highest number of world championship points without a Grand Prix win, shares the record for the most podium finishes without a Grand Prix win with Stefan Johansson, and has the most second place finishes without a win, with 8.

It really highlights Heidfeld's best ability. Whilst he might not be the fastest driver out there, at the moment he seems to be the least prone to mistakes and the best at avoiding accidents. Now if only he'd go out there and win me some races. :(

Schuy may have did that whilst scoring in every race, but he was in a Ferrari. Nick had major problems last year with Quali, and the BMW this year has not been great. It's still a great achievement.

Also, that said he last retirement was at Fuji in 2007. But Nick was still classified as 14th in that race since he completed 65/67 laps. So before that, his last retirement was the US gran prix 2007. So...

As for his record regarding no wins. He's had 6 2nd place finishes in his career. That's 6 times he's just been out of reach for the win. I mean, that's got to be pretty irksome. But hopefully he'll manage to take a win soon. Maybe not this year, but soon.

Well, it's eight, so even more irksome! :P

Had he not had qualifying problems last year, I reckon he'd have taken a win then. There were plenty of races for him to have benefited from other peoples' bad luck/mistakes. In fact, had he followed Barrichello's lead and switched to full-wets at Silverstone, he could have won that... :)

ALL the cars are on average more reliable than they were in the MS era. That must account for at least part of this.

Whilst that is true, Ferrari's cars seemed to be designed around reliability in Schumacher's time, just as BMW Sauber's cars seem to be now.
