Ferrari have applied to a French court for an injunction against proposed changes in Formula One, according to FIA president Max Mosley.

Ferrari are among the teams who have threatened to withdraw at the end of this season unless fundamental revisions are made to the new regulations.

Central to the argument is the claim that an optional £40million budget cap to be imposed for next year could create a two-tier F1.

Mosley and F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone attended a meeting with team bosses at a Heathrow Airport hotel in London to discuss the current crisis.

"During the meeting it became apparent that Ferrari have made an application to the French courts to apply for an injunction to stop us doing what we want to do," Mosley said.

At the end of the meeting no solution was agreed, with teams leaving to discuss alternatives.

"It was a friendly meeting but the teams have gone off to see if they can come up with something better than the cost cap," Mosley said.

No agreement between teams and FIA

By Jonathan Noble Friday, May 15th 2009, 15:40 GMT

The FIA's crunch meeting with teams ended without agreement on Friday as the governing body refused to compromise over plans for a two-tier category.

Max Mosley said there had been 'friendly' discussions with teams but that the FIA was not willing to back down over its plans for a £40 million cap.

Teams have now gone into another meeting to discuss their response to the FIA's stance.

Furthermore, it emerged during the meeting that Ferrari has lodged legal action in the French courts to block the 2010 rules - claiming their introduction was a breach of a technical veto they had.

Surely the budget cap is one of the main forces behind new teams wanting to enter the sport. If Ferrari and co. do form a breakaway series, who could ever afford to join them?

Exactly.

100% correct, plus there is no security in a new series.
How can any car manufacturer guarantee to remain comitted to a motorsport programme for the long term?

They can't. Only private teams will risk financial collapse solely for the joy of racing.
