Let's do this little mind game and let's pretend there will be a breakaway series with Ferrari, RBR, BMW, Toyota, Renault, STR and yes, McLaren (plus some newbies maybe).
Which races could we expect to feature in such a championship as opposed to the crippled F1 that's left?
With Ferrari in the mix: Monza and San Marino, possibly GP Rome and Abu Dhabi with its theme park (all four wouldn't want to organize a race w/o Ferrari participation).
RBR/STR: A1 ring in Austria, probably Hungaroring as well.
BMW: a German race track fo shure plus Malaysia (old connections).
Toyota brings Fuji to the party.
Renault would lobby for a French GP plus Monte Carlo (all teams would) and a Spanish GP for Alonso.
McLaren would like to see Silverstone (plus a German track).
All teams will want Australia, Montreal, USA, probably Spain, Spa, Brazil, possibly Mexico/Argentina (maybe alternating).
For commercial interests, China and possibly Moscow and South Africa.
So, how many is that? 21 or so. To reduce the number, more tracks would probably alternate with other tracks (China/Russia/Malaysia, e.g., or Austria/Hungary, Rome/San Marino, Abu Dhabi/South Africa and so on).
Many tracks should be more than willing to escape BE's money terror either because they have been kicked out by him before or are on the brink of being kicked out.
The toughest nut to crack would be Monte Carlo. The GP of Monaco is to the race tracks what Ferrari is to the F1 teams. If Monte Carlo jumps on the new series bandwagon, BE can pack up his FOM and shove off.

There won't be a breakaway series.

Bernie holds contracts with most of the circuits that have been already been mentioned.

Only ones that could be in there would be Imola, Montreal, Indianapolis, Algarve, Silverstone, Fiji, Dubai, Losail.

Nah, what about A1? Mexico/Argentina? Moscow? South Africa (Kyalami), Aussieland could be Adelaide, Germany could be either or some smaller venue, Rome is not currently in F1, thus available. Factor in some clauses in contracts that may force BE to run some names such as Ferrari on certain race tracks (Monza, Monte Carlo?), and I'm pretty sure there will be enough decent/good races available. As stated before, I believe Monaco is the lynchpin...

Your right DD but lets say the breakaway series called GP1 for example started for 2010.

They would be able to race on circuits Ewman has mentioned and the free ones you have mentioed

Then the contracts would kick in..and monaco monza etc.. would be avalible next year.

However this would make it difficult for them to sign long term contracts wit the circuits

Short-term contracts are better than no contract at all. BE wouldn't be able to come up with a worthy series to continue his contracts, so racetracks would be having a long and hard look at their options...

Neither will happen, and I don't think people should even contemplate it to be honest. Formula One is relatively sucessful as things stand, it keeps growing every year and improving its spectacle.

The FIA/FOTA battle would be better ending in a compromise - it is the most likely option and one that I think would be for the best.
The FIA isn't entirely bad, its mainly its figurehead(s) have been in office for too long, and have became too corrupt. It is better to reform the sport from within than go off and make a completely different one.

it would be hard to get a full season underway for 2010 i think anyway. a 2011 race season would be more likely!

And that is actually what I was thinking anyway: Let's have an off-year where teams can regroup and all. Have some exhibition races going at special venues, maybe once a month, to keep everybody wanting for more in 2011. That way teams can save a lot of money and can figure out all the contracts, the championship, the rules, etc., without having to rush things on the technology side with developments, etc., at the same time.

Ah, go away you little party pooper! :P
It's okay to dream or are you Mr. Orwell himself? :hehe:

i think youre living in denial if you think there will be a compromise, word is the FIA does not want to compromise and if they do it will be cutting the two tier system but keep the cap at 80m for 2010 and by 2012 the cap will then be 40m. the FIA wants new blood in the sport. cheap blood at the expense of the current teams.

i would welcome a breakaway with open arms! the FIA is a joke of an organization anyway!

Why do you need to dream though, Formula One is fine. You for one should be happy with its track record over the last few years. Up until now the FIA bent over backwards for Ferrari and even gave them a veto of the regulation. They threaten to quit after ONE thing goes against them. That's nothing in comparison to what the other teams have suffered in the past ten plus years.
