Super Aguri in line for early F1 return

From Byron Young in Barcelona 6/05/2009

Super Aguri could make a surprise race to Grand Prix racing next year, according to reports from Japan.

The Honda powered operation that withdrew from the sport at the start of last year because of lack finance is considering an early return.

Team boss and ex-F1 racer Aguri Suzuki said he will be attempting to take one of the three new team slots up for grabs in 2010.

What inspired him to consider a return less than 18 months after his emotional departure was the new £40m budget cap set to revolutionise the cost of competition.

FIA President Max Mosley is dangling the possibility of credible, competitive cars, for a quarter of current budgets because those who refuse to follow the cost restrictions will be forced to compete within rougher technical limitations.

"If it's physically possible I would certainly like to return," said Suzuki.

Super Aguri quit the sport after behind-the-scenes machinations in the paddock resulted in a major sponsorship deal collapsing and backers Honda refusing to continue to carry a majority of the £150m cost as well as financing their own operation from Brackley.

Honda pulled out of Formula 1 at the end of last year citing the credit crunch and falling car sales.

But they are likely to be re-considering their actions in light of the fact that their team, renamed Brawn, financed by their £100m pay-off is now leading and favourites to win the world championship.

At an emotional press conference last year Suzuki slammed Formula One at an emotional news conference saying: "It's a club full of piranhas"

Fantastic Just what F1 needs i bet they get Sato

they could have Sato and Nakajima with Ide as a Reserve

Would be fantastic like Destrustion derby f1

Does anyone know how much was it costing Super Aguri approx. to run a year before?

...aaaaaand, what happens if more than 3 new teams want to enter, will we see a return to pre-qualifying or will they just pick who they think are the best 3 candidates?

Its already pretty likely that 3 teams will have to be chosen. They can't let everyone join.

But surely I'd like to see Super Aguri back, if it happens fantastic. If it doesn't, I'll hardly be heart broken. But Super Aguri were a great team with great spirit. I just wouldn't want them to come back to be the team filling up the grid slots again. The Super Aguri we seen in 2007, yes please.

I'd like to see the three best options chosen. It is good to see some people are willing to enter Formula One again. The sport really needs 26 cars.

I wonder how Nick Fry would feel if Super Aguri returned? I would like to see a return to Friday morning pre-qualifying to eliminate the slowest of the slow.

If Aguri wants to take Nakajima away he is more than welcome to do so.

Nick Fry would be worried, especialy when he saw Nakajima and Sato don Bonzai headbands aim for the Brawn's

Can we address (Once again) that the name is preposterous?

Good luck to him though.

I would love to see Super Aguri back as well, and if they do indeed return, hopefully they'll be in the PS3/360 F1 2010 and I will be able to crush all the other teams with that not-so-great car... :hehe:

Hopefully the deal works out though. Because we already have a USF1 team, and perhaps Lola, and a bunch of other prospective teams now.
