President Obama just announced that Chrysler will have 30 days (and get some money to stay afloat for that period) to forge a partnership, essentially merge with FIAT. Chrysler when sold by Daimler some time ago was left with less than adequate resources for technical developments, etc., so they desperately need a partner that can provide technology knowhow and they have identified FIAT as a potential partner. FIAT is to produce fuel efficient cars in America - most likely much smaller cars than customary here in the US. The Europeanization of America is on its way

At the same press conference, Obama also announced that GM CEO Rick Wagner had been fired by him (not in those words, but it pretty much amounts to that) and they have 60 days to clean up their act and make tough choices to ensure their survival.

Does this not mean that Daimler AG and Fiat will have to work in partnership over Chrysler, or would FIAT buy them out of their 19% share?

Good question. Not sure it's actually that many percent that Daimler still holds, but could be true. It's mostly a financial holding for Daimler anyway, so collaboration would be minimal unless FIAT decides to actually actively pursue a closer partnership with Daimler. I wouldn't be surprised if the US government offers to take over Daimler's shares if that's a hurdle for the FIAT-Chrysler deal.

Just announced: FIAT and Chrysler reached a deal - not in 30 days, but within ONE day!
Pundits have been saying that Chrysler could have been well on its way to bankruptcy, so this is good news for autoworkers, etc.

Yeah, its good to keep the company afloat and also if it means that newer more fuel efficent road cars become its paramount output for the future.
I bet Pressy Obama is dancing on the Ceiling.

It will also be very nice to have FIAT back in the US market. Economic times are tuff so we all must work together for overall survival. :)

Hmm. Remember when Daimler merged with Chrysler? That was a shotgun wedding that ended in tears. I am not saying that the deal is a bad one but they could have taken more than one day to think about it.

Oh, I'm sure they did - this merger has been in the works for weeks. Chrysler knows exactly what its weaknesses are and what they need to do to survive. They need a technologically strong partner and FIAT is probably eying the huge American market that they have been virtually invisible in for the last few decades.

Incidentally, those weaknesses are a direct result of the merger and then split with Daimler. Daimler basically reduced Chrysler to a manufacturer of big trucks and SUVs with no regard for technological advances in fuel efficiency, model modernization with respect to customers' change in taste, etc. Chrysler was also left more vulnerable compared to Ford and GM because it basically only has the domestic market to play in - exports are virtually non-existent when compared to the other big two.

When will Chrysler, FORD and GM learn?? :banghead: Get rid of the UAW/CAW and invest all that waisted money into research and development!! Here's hoping FIAT can do it, but I don't have much hope in that!!
