Just speaking to alot of friends, family etc who have travelled to Europe have all said the same thing. no one likes the British, Mainly in France! Stories where they assume youre English but once you tell them youre Australian they all the sudden become friendly. Another story where a friends friend has a dual Aussie/Brit Passport when travelling around with the British one got treated like s*** decided to use the Aussie one and then everyone was nice and friendly like.
So basically what is up with this mainland mindset?

curious to know.... one day i want to use my British passport in Europe and see for myself :hehe:

You really shouldn't use the title Anti British. I've travelled quite far around mainland Europe and I have experienced what you have meant. However once they have realised that I am Scottish (and my travelling party is) they have became very welcoming.
Seems to be only an English thing. My dad was out cycling in the middle of know where in France in the summer and came across this pub. So he went in for a drink and the same thing happened, they were quite hostile until he spoke more and they picked up on his accent.
Tis weird.

And the Netherlands. That happened there as well to me. Mind you can you blame them. 9/10 the reason they dislike English is due to the numerous Soccer/Football riots at major tournaments by England fans. At Euro 2000 (in the Netherlands/Belgium) the English fans just rioted - It was really a disgrace and gave them a very bad name.

I don't think its fair to be judged on the actions of a few hooligans.

I mean the itallians are worse when it comes to football violence.

theres the same think in the UK with the Germans tho.

Judge the person not where the from tho or the actions of there forefathers or contrymen.

I mean based on that i could assume all ozzy's are criminals but that would be stupid. :P

Yeh i don't lend to Sterotypes Unless there a scouser...then its diffrent. :P

It is not a case of who is right or wrong. It's just the way Continental Europe view England unfortunately.

When I was in Amsterdam there were two english gents I drank and smoked with on a daily basis and they were great people. We would have a competition as to who could by more rounds for each other, great fun they were.

Well not all Australia was a penal colony

The Colony of South Australia - Adelaide was the only such colony that was for free settlers. I have no Convict ancestors... well atleast on my dads side but they were from Germany anyways and my mums from Scotland. so buds a convict free state :hehe:

Besides most of the crimes that people were getting sent for were petty crimes such as bread stealing etc.

As an English person myself, when i'm on holiday in Europe, I never have any trouble with European people, usually Brits. In Ski resorts especially, the Brits make me ashamed. I think we are an inherently xenophobic nation and we seem to feel the need to act like tw*ts when we're in another country.

From my experience, Australians and New Zealanders are very nice people, humble and friendly.
British are a lot more reserved and give out an arrogant vibe, but generally are very well mannered, which means they will not be as friendly from the get go, but you get to know them you realize their apparent arrogance is just the way their humour and conversational 'style' is perceived...

All european countries have their stereotype and the surrounding nationals joke about it, 'island' people (like myself) and people from big countries arent really familiar with this... but in Europe it is pretty normal to compete between nations.

Some people on the European mainland are dicks. Although I like France, its attitude to the United Kingdom and America is pretty disgraceful at times. Its governments' attempts to claim France liberated itself in the Second World War is one of the most disgusting pieces of revisionism I've ever come across. That said, some things do need qualified. As somebody has already mentioned, it's more an anti-English thing. When I am in Europe and say I'm Irish, people are noticeably more friendly. And the anti-English sentiments are not entirely unjustified. Whilst it would be wrong and unfair to say all English people are the same (some of the most cultured and intelligent people I know are English), there is a disproportionate number of them who behave like scum when they are on the European mainland, so the locals' fears are not exactly unjustified.

Well said.

I lived in Cyprus for 4 years and I was ashamed of how the English behaved whilst on holiday. the Scottish/Germans seems to come out at the start or the end of the season and they where always very little trouble about. When the English turned up it was bad, then there was the Italians that followed the English there was loads of trouble in the changeover time and then there was a some (more than scots/Germans, but less than the English) trouble with the Italians alone. However as the age of a group increase the Italians became worse than the English by the 40-50 age group. The English and the Scots where probably the least trouble at that age.

Just my observations
