Italian authorities have brought an end to legal action relating to McLaren's 2007 spy case, as autosport.com predicted last year.

Charges against ex-McLaren chief designer Mike Coughlan, plus senior McLaren engineers Paddy Lowe, Jonathan Neale and Rob Taylor have been dropped after a 'nolo contendere' (no contest) agreement between the respective lawyers representing them and the Modena district attorney.

In exchange for not contesting charges of copyright infringement relating to Ferrari's data, Coughlan will have to pay 180,000 Euros, with the other three men will pay 150,000 Euros each.

A McLaren spokesman said: "The proceedings in Italy were merely the officialising of what had been proposed long before, namely the 'nolo contendere' agreement. A line has finally been drawn under this matter."

It is understood that McLaren will pay the monies of Lowe, Neale and Taylor, while it is unknown whether or not former McLaren chief designer Coughlan will have to pay for himself.

I'm a bit disappointed that Lowe, Neale and Taylor's names have been tarnished in the affair, but at the least the spy scandal is done and dusted. I hope (and expect) Coughlan is paying his own fine. I hope he rots.
