McLaren boss Ron Dennis believes that Max Mosley's successor as FIA president should not be anyone who has formerly had close ties with a Formula One team.

With Mosley set to make a final decision in June about whether he will definitely stand down when his current term comes to an end later this year, there has been fevered speculation about who could follow in his footsteps.

As well as recent rumours about Sir Fred Goodwin, the ex-chairman of the Royal Bank of Scotland, being linked with the role, former Ferrari team principal Jean Todt has often been connected with the position.

However, Dennis believes it would be totally wrong for any former team principal to take the position.

Speaking in the latest edition of F1 Racing about whether he would be interested in the job, Dennis said: "I feel very strongly that no senior member of any Formula One team should ever go to hold a senior position within the FIA.

"Anybody who's in a position of leadership of a company has to live, sleep and breathe that brand, and I think it would be impossible for me - even though I consider myself extremely disciplined - to be completely impartial regarding all the teams.

"I don't think it's possible for anyone who's led a successful team, frankly, and it would therefore be inappropriate for me."

Dennis added that he could never see himself working for anybody in the sport other than McLaren.

"You know, if you cut me I'd bleed McLaren, but it goes beyond that," he said. "The DNA of McLaren is in me and I'm in the DNA of McLaren.

"I simply can't imagine ever being able to put my mind where it would have to be in order to function effectively in another Formula One environment. It's as simple as that."

I completely agree.

He's right, nobody who has been involved in F1 commercially should be allowed to become FIA president. Had that rule been in place we would have been spared Mosley, for example.

I call shenanigans on someone here cause i read that exact quote in F1 Racing...

Either way, i don't think someone outside of the sport (especially a banker) would be the way to go, it HAS to be someone with a large stake/interest in F1 - imo a bank chairman with no apparent ties to F1 would have potential to be far more concerned with money issues than the actual sport, and that really just reminds me of a certain guy at the top who we already have making ludicrous decisions in order to seemingly make himself money. :screwy:

By the same token, Dennis and Todt would be ridiculous candidates due to their very intricate ties with their respective teams!

Does that rule out Sir Jackie Stewart? I know he had close ties to Tyrrell and of course started up Stewart Grand Prix, but there's a lot more to him than that.

Well said Ron. Wonder whether impartiality has crossed Todt's mind.
Yes i think there was a message to Todt there, but how thick skinned is he?

I don't think Sir Jacket Stewart would be a problem. Tyrrell and Stewart are long gone.

I've said this before. Whereas Jackie would do a good job he is too old to take it over now and I'm sure he wouldn't.

He has nothing to prove, 3 time World Champion - one of the Greats... argubly the best of British. (Though I think his Scottish compatriot Clark just pips him to that).
Successful Commentator and broadcaster, safety campaigner.
Ran a successful F1 team - sold it for Profit, Ran a number of Successful Junior Teams leading to the establishment of names such as Franchitti, Coulthard, De Ferran etc.
Successful businessman, owner of an estate in Bonnie Glasgow.
And all starting from the humbling beginnings of a Dumbartonshire Petrol Station.

:D
