Former Formula 1 World Champion Denny Hulme died in 1992, at the age of only 56. Yet at home in New Zealand he has not been forgotten. As the McLaren name continues to be high profile in Formula 1, the Hulme name is making a comeback with a new supercar being named the Hulme CanAm in his honour. The prototype Hulme Canam made its first appearance today at the Taupo circuit on North Island, with Chris Amon at the wheel. The CanAm name was added because of Hulme's success in the US sports car series in 1968 and 1970.

The car was designed by Professor Tony Parker of Massey University and is being built by Supercars Ltd, a company owned by Auckland entrepreneur Jock Freemantle. Parker used the project to help educate engineering students, who worked on different elements of the design during the development process. It is powered by a 7-litre Chevrolet V8.The car, which is expected to be sold only to wealthy collectors, is expected to sell at around $400,000.

While this is hardly a good time to be launching expensive new cars, Parker and Fremantle believe that there will be sufficient super-rich people in the world to make the programme cost-effective.
