From F1 Live:

Rumours in the UK's business and financial world indicate that Sir Fred Goodwin, although not the most lauded businessman of the moment, is being lined up for a new career in Formula One.

"Sir Fred has been sounded out over a role, possibly in a post-Max Mosley world," The Times newspaper said.

Mosley, the current President of the sport's governing body the FIA, is yet to decide whether to stand for re-election later this year.

Scotsman Goodwin, 50, was until recently the Chief Executive of the Royal Bank of Scotland, but is now being blamed for the institution's spectacular slump amid the global financial crisis.

But The Times said Goodwin, knighted in 2004 for services to banking, is a 'petrolhead' and regular visitor to Grand Prix who masterminded the bank's current sponsorship of the British team Williams.

RBS's sporting ambassador, meanwhile, is the former triple world champion Sir Jackie Stewart, who has stridently called for Mosley to step down in deference to a "captain of industry, a CEO of standing" from outside F1.

Yeah bankers!! ( thats a 'b' that word started with though a 'w' was desperate to get in there!) Get rich and screw the world! Great!!

Do we know for sure that this b-anker isn 't some sort of S&M freak? It's not like he hasn't got the kind of disposable income that would support such a habit now is it?

Great ... a man who screwed the customers as head of RBS and now he will be possibly in contention for President of FIA ... once a *anker always a *anker - just what we need to lead the FIA after Max (if he steps down).

PS Have RBS withdrawn their funding to F1 this year?

They're still one of the prominent sponsors with Williams, I think this year is the final year in the RBS sponsorship deal and I can't really see it being renewed in this current climate.

Good to hear that ... have lost track of who is withdrawing sponsorship along the way. Would not want to see any of our competitors lose out due to lack of sponsorhip support ... mind you if Bernie and Max keep it up then F1 may see some of the major sponsors withdraw or try to extricate themselves from contractual obligations as they would not want their blue chip companies tainted with association with the public hand bags at dawn.

How about Sir Ron for FIA President? :drink:

He is according to the Times possibly the World's Worst Banker. (Sir) Fred Goodwin is being tipped to take over from Max Mosley when he steps down. Goodwin, fresh from steering the world's 4th largest bank, RBS, to a UK corporate record £28 billion loss and into public ownership, is being sponsored by Sir Jackie Stewart as a possible successor. Sir Jackie, of course, was appointed a "sporting ambassador" by Sir Fred after RBS provided massive sponsorship to Williams F1. Perhaps it's a case of you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. Makes a change from the usual buttock whipping that the last lot enjoyed so much.

Will this be the final nail in the coffin for F1 with all the punters turning off and the sponsors thinking that they're better off keeping their hard earned cash to themselves rather than pour it into the trough that is F1?

Well if thats true thats a real shame that Jackie Stewart is getting into that sort of game. I thought he was above that sort of thing.
