From F1 Live:

Under the auspices of Force India's new technical collaboration with McLaren-Mercedes, the McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa recently tested with the Silverstone-based team.

But with Force India settling on an unchanged race line-up, the veteran Spaniard said he accepts that his role this year will remain on the sidelines.

Asked by the Spanish radio sports programme El Larguero if he expected better treatment for his loyalty, the 37-year-old said: "Good or bad, it is not up to me."

"I do deserve a seat, my quality of driving is better than it has ever been, especially since the removal of the electronic aids," he said at the Autosport International show in Birmingham.

"It's really difficult not being able to prove it. I have tried my hardest.
It is important to me to remain hopeful of returning to race at least until the end of the year."

"I have been close (to returning) a couple of times, hopefully I will not lose hope," the Spaniard said, "but at the moment I have hope and that is why I am staying with the best team and saying no to other categories."

De la Rosa said he is currently under contract to McLaren, which he joined in 2003, for one more season.

What are people's views on this? Whilst I don't think de la Rosa is championship-winning material, he is a safe pair of hands. Had I been in charge of McLaren last season, once it became clear Kovalainen was out of his depth, I'd have given de la Rosa a chance to show what he could do. He certainly couldn't do any worse than Kovalainen's nothings. If Kovalainen still isn't up to scratch next season, I'd still like to see de la Rosa given a chance.

He's getting a bit long in the tooth though...

There are a few young guns who like they could do a job in Formula One with a bit more experience, so a guy like de la Rosa could do a job for a team for a year or two until the younger drivers are ready. I don't, however, see that happening and I certainly don't see de la Rosa being seen as a serious option for teams. From a McLaren supporter's point of view, although I would like to see him take over the wheel if Kovalainen isn't up to speed, I would only like it to be a temporary thing until a replacement for Kovalainen is found.

I think De La Rosa would be able to do a better job than Fisichella and Sutil. If I was Ron though I'd pursuade Dr Mallya to keep on Sutil so he can cause incidents with Ferraris again next year. :hehe:

I think de la Rosa could still make it to a F1 seat, but I do agree about keeping Adrian, youd better watch out Ferrari :wavey: Vengence is sweet

2009 is very much a 'make or break' season for Adrian Sutil. If he performs poorly again, then almost all interest in him will be lost as the new guys (Senna, Di Grassi, Di Resta etc.) are snapped up to replace outgoing drivers. In which case, Adrian would be a backmarker for the rest of his career and it probably wouldn't be very long before he was out as even Mr. Mallya lost patience with him. Being out-classed by Fisichella, when you're supposed to be a very talented star in-the-making, isn't exactly going to do your career any favours (that's not a dig at Fisi, but most people seem not to rate him, so it would have a negative effect on Sutil's reputation).

I agree. In terms of Fisichella, I think most people see him as somebody who is out of his depth in a top team but who is also a solid pair of hands in less competitive cars. That said, Sutil who was being talked up as the next best thing really should have been able to noticeably outperform a mere Steady Eddie.
